*Looks like this works for most 1D / 1Ds users
*Does not look to work for D30/D60/10D (probably in a different area on the exif?)
*The ones that don't work -- was your camera ever sent to Canon? I'm pretty sure actual shutter actuation counter can be reset pretty easily by Canon.
I also works with the 1Ds. I bought a 1 yeard old 1Ds a month ago. The people at the store told me it had been used just a little bit. Although the camera looks like new in the back of my mind there was doubt since they let it go for $5700.00. Today I checked the EXIF and I was happy to find that the camera only has about 2500 exposures. I took several shots and the number keeps increasing and it didn't change even after I switched flash cards.
This thing about sending a camera to Canon for maintenance and disrupting the shutter count in the EXIF looks to be correct. I too have a 1D that was sent to Canon NJ for minor maintenance and cleaning some time back and the count now shows about 850 shots which can not be correct. It has at least several thousand shots on it.
