I think this is probably the most effective way of seeing just how many actuations on your 1D. I've tested this on mine and another friends camera, and it is very accurate. We've formatted the card.. stuck in a brand new CF card, and the results are always accurate.

1. Download this exif reader (http://www.takenet.or.jp/~ryuuji/minisoft/exifread/english/download.html)

2. Take a picture with your 1D

3. Copy file to your HD

4. Open the file with exif reader

5. Look for the line: Unknown (0093)3,9: 18,0,XXXXX,0,0,0,65535,65535,0

6. XXXXX = how many shutter actuations on your camera.

http://www.stanc.net/stuff/exif.JPG

on my particular camera, I have 1043 shutter actuations.

Thanks Stan, works well....looks like I found about 5800 more clicks than I thought I had when I bought it.....oh well, 17900 is still a long way from 150000...

Now, there was a post in the past month that described how to 'reset' your file # to the accurate/correct #---had something to do with erasing the data file via your computer and regenerating it in the camer....does anybody remember where that post is??

Somethings not right with that or my camera! . I just took 4 shots one on each setting:

Small JPEG Unknown (0093)3,9 : 18,0,870,0,0,0,65535,65535,2
Large Coarse Unknown (0093)3,9 : 18,0,871,0,0,0,65535,65535,2
Large Fine Unknown (0093)3,9 : 18,0,872,0,0,0,65535,65535,2
Raw Unknown (0093)3,9 : 18,0,873,0,0,0,65535,65535,2

I know thats not correct, so I opened a recent shot i took on 1/18/2004
Taken 1/18 Unknown (0093)3,9 : 18,0,813,0,0,0,65535,65535,2

Making good sense so far right as far as the munbers, but still not right.

Well check this one out:

Unknown (0093)3,9 : 18,0,2305,0,0,0,65535,65535,1

This was the last shot I took in June of 2003 before I sent it in for a cleaning and general test out.

Now there is no way I rolled it over, and how could the munbers have gone down?
It should be about 4-5k total shots at most.

bobjarman,

Good question.. Perhaps when you sent your Camera to Canon, they did some reprogramming at the system level, re-setting your camera? Not sure. Both my friend and my camera were never sent to Canon.

Prob that is it, that would set the total at 2305 + 813 or 3118, which is probably about correct as i think about it.

I need to shoot more.

Does the Canon software need to be installed in order to use the exif reader? I didn't install the software when I got my D30 last month. I just use a cardreader to download the images. When I took the first pic with it the number that is displayed was img_9622. I am assuming that is the total shutter clicks from the previous owner.

Stan,

I tried this with my 2 1D bodies and I am sure it is not correct! One says I have 1 exposure and the other says 43,233. Anyone know of another way?

Thanks!

Seems to work for my 1D. I took a shot, read the file, took another shot, read the file and the number incremented by one.
Thanks for the insite.

This is way cool -- glad to know how many shots I've taken. I've never been concerned with it - but it's still good info -- I actually feel the same way with my 1D as I do - did with my 1n -- it truley is a Canon and I always feel it just won't quit. ( THE # 1 reason I bought it )

This works on my 1DS as well. Interesting, as I just rolled over 9999 this past weekend; now have a five digit number. Went back and checked very old shots with low numbers, some more recent etc. No padding of zeros, just increases digits as needed. Seems to the real thing.

for you mac users... you can try to do the same with EXIF-O-Matic... it's a freeware, so just download it from versiontracker.
i can use it to see my 1D, but cannot really install in my powerbook... have to mount the image every time i want to use it, but lots of people said it;s working find...

look for almost the same line... looks like this:

my shot here is 7236
i checked, and this is relevan to the number of shot i made... FYI it will not work with 10D or canon point and shoot cameras.... no infos on my S400 and 10D, also nothing from my D30.... but works with my 1D.

hmmm my linked image doesnt seem to work, so look for this line:

Unknown tag (0x0093) 18 0 xxxx 0 0 0 65535 65535 1

where xxxx is the number of frame shot....
