You know, it's so interesting to compare different cultures.
In *some* cultures of the East (some Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures) no one really cares about diamonds. the whole "diamond is a girl's best friend" isn't really understood. It's more about gold than rocks. there are weddings where the girl might be given a $1,000 dollar ring, but $80,000 in gold. Also, in the East, they don't do the whole 12 karat half-copper-half-gold deal either. You bring 22 karats (almost pure gold), period.
I tried to figure out why the emphasis on gold was so much more than diamonds and I was told that it has to do with "outlook". Apparently, diamonds are only rare due to commercial limitations on the number of diamonds released to the public by the major diamond mining companies. There are tuns of giant diamond mines everywhere, so the value is more about cut, clarity, etc. coupled with market control. As far as gold goes, it's always been rare, has always been treasured, and has been used as the standard of money for a large part of modern history. Who really knows ::shrug::...Show more →

Brilliant marketing by DeBeers in the 20th century really. That's why no one really 'invests' in diamonds, because their value is falsely inflated, and they can be manufactured too. That said, I too bought a diamond engagement ring so I'm not helping the problem...

Just remember guys - it isn't about the size of the diamond at all. My husband could have proposed with a candy ring pop and my answer still would have been yes
I proposed to my wife while working in a pizza place right after higschool. All I could afford was a $400 1/6 karat ring.... that was 12 years ago and I could afford to buy her a much nicer ring now, but she won't let me
Allow it mate... Diamonds do not have resale value. Not the way Gold does anyway. They are mostly for show and status symbols.
Just like a Lambo is for show even though You can never drive that badboy to the fullest... but the rediculous price to look like the BIG BOSS in town...
