got a 50D thursday, so had to get out and give her/he/it a try.
I DO recommend this body....its 15mpx crops really well
and if exposure is good and one uses good noise reduction technique,
this thing rocks IMO. I find BIF tracking excellent....in my limited experience
critique away....exif intact, all heavy crops except feral cats and egret
#1 pelican at 7:30 sunrise....cold cold for Louisiana this morning.
EXtremely heavy crop grab shot, first of the morning with 50D

#2 GBH

#3 another pelican....zoom zoom, on glide

#4 a gull.....no zoom zoom here

#5 no room in the frame....darn egret forgot about 1.6 crop factor

#6 mourning dove....in the morning

and for those that don't mind the felines
#7 feral cat #1

#8 feral cat #2

thanks for looking in and have a great weekend
also:
this $5 bill is 100% crop, shot @ ISO 1250 in my bedroom
w/70-400 f/4L IS at f/5.6 and 1/50 sec resting on a chair back
and IS enabled. This looks really good to me.
RAW normal process in Capture One

Cool variety Dave and it looks like that 50D will be treating you well into 2009, looking forward to more. Good luck with it. Like the feral cats, second one looks like one of mine.
Herb
Looks realy nice DAve and now what did you do with the 1dm2 or are you keeping both. I like my 40D better than the 1dm2n so I can see you got a good one here.
Lou
You seem quite impressed and excited, that is good to hear Just some general comments as you have stated crops and first time out so I will give you one more outing to be up to speed, most of us about 6 outings or so
Some pretty light on the first flyer, and a nice level horizon
GBH, had in my mind what Chad was seeing but the eye looks very sharp, maybe a bit of softness from NR of some type??
Peli, I am counting feathers on that one, it IS sharp and a neat shot! P
Gull, kind of the same feel as the GBH as I see it.
Egret full frame rocks, sharp and a wonderful white with a hint of rust in mid wing center Beautifu shot Dave.
Dovely shot
Feral excellence x2...........love every one of these......as you know
The orders are pouring in for the 70-400, you will be receiving royalties soon for your 'sharp' advertising campaign introduction!
Congrats, Dave. These look all very good and detail look fine to me. I found The IQ of the feral cats a bit better than the one in your previous one and detail are naturally sharp. The only think I noticed, is a bit of noise in the sky of #4. I purposely looked at that shot in PS (and applied some noise reduction to see the difference) because I found the same think in my shots when I was shooting @ the airshow.

Congratulations Dave!!
Not a bad first outing!! What a way to start out with a new body. The heavy crops look great. Doesn't that body crop awfully damn good?
5 WOW, looks like you have been using that body for a while, great job on the exposure, it all looks luscious.
You are the cat man, as always very well captured. These guys have stories to tell and they are telling them.
Love the dove, what a great pose and expression.
The money shot, tells it all.
Very well done sir!
Tim
Are you going to keep it
Thanks Tim....I really like the menu setup also....and those cats do have a bitter sweet life

Thanks for looking in Chad......only Socrate and I have that lens.....I wish!!
The GBH and gull are definitely soft......they were very small in the frame. I'll get there

Thanks Lou....may sell the MkIIN and get a used 5D
Looks awesome, Dave!
Glad to hear you like it too. Love the cats! And that says alot coming from a dog person.
I am in Las Vegas tonight, and tomorrow ik am going to give the 50D a try in Death Valley!
Dave, I've mentioned before that I was considering a 50D, so I've been looking critically at each 50D post. Your first 2 shots are nice, but not bleeding eye tack sharp, but after those 2, they rock. I'm closer to making a decision....
Thanx,
Ron

Dave,
Looks like you got a keeper with that 50D. Thanks for sharing these wonderful captures with us.
Oh, and the first 5 are my favorites..
Thanks, always appreciate the comment

Most very excellent, Dave. I've been lusting after a 50d since they came out and this might push me over the edge to get one.
I've never heard of a 70-400 f/4L IS in the Canon line up. Is this something new
Ken
Thanks Ken.....the camera surprised me. I made my decision to get one after Thang posted his crops a while back. I think he withdrew
his from buy and sell....now that 70-400, well.....it's a southern thang, part of the coming "share the wealth" program for us backwuds folk

Thanks Karl....yes those soft BIF were too heavy of crops for that size, really they were underexposed and little detail gets through when you open them up, but they are my firsts

Thanks Socrate.....I was being a bit conservative with nr. Appreciate you pointing it out. Those cats need to be in dull light for best detail....too many highlights if the sun gets to them
Dave, the crop you have used for the first pelican works admirably well for the whole image. The dove stands out as you got her in good light nice and sharp.
The kitties are kool too.
Pelican and egret shots rock Dave Pls let us know more of you're findings / opinions on the 50d as you go along. I would truly appreciate it
Havin' said that, i'm keepin my 40d even if I do realise that in some situations 50d is superior but not too much of a revolution to push me over the edge My next body gotta be a full-frame or a x1.3 crop
