p.1 #1 · nikkor to canon lens adapter experience?

Dear colleagues,

i'm currently shooting with all nikon gear - very happy with it, but i am very interested in the 5D mkII. I do not want to switch systems - the 5D however seems like a tool i could have good use for.

i don't mind losing AF or metering - doe anyone here uses a nikkor-canon adapter? are you happy with it? are there any negative effects (loss of sharpness, magnification factor etc etc)...i have never seen or used such an adapter

many thanks in advance,
all the best,
Lucky

I've used cheap eBay adaptors in the past on an EOS 3, Rebel XS (film) and a EOS 10D. They worked very well (I'm primarily a Nikon shooter, using mostly MF lenses)

I'm headed back in that direction (original 5D) but am going to spring for the Fotodiox adaptors this time, for the better build and easier removal.

There's essentially no downside to a good adaptor optically (no optics in the adaptor means they work just fine if the thickness is correct).

There has to be more Nikon lens to Canon EOS body adapters than I have underwear. ;-) The less expensive ones have a split slot on the lens mount side to keep the tension. They will eventually loosen after some use. The more expensive ones have a leaf spring on the mount to provide tension and they last a lot longer. Novoflex seems to have about the highest quality adapter but of course they are the most expensive. Some adapter comes with focus confirmation chip so the autofocus in the camera will work.

Would definitely go the Fotodiox adapters. The two Chinese adapters I've tried did not hold the lens well and were way too thin. The Fotodiox is perfect. There are non-branded adapters on ebay that come from the same factory as Fotodiox and are for all intents and purposes identical with the Fotodiox ones. They are a bit cheaper.
I would recommend sending your Fotodiox adapter to HappyPageHK in HK to chip them with the exif data that best correpsonds to your lenses - it isn't perfect for focusing, but in my experience it helps to regulate variations in exposure as you stop down. Also lets you know which lens you used for which shot after the fact.

Lucky,

Thanks to Tariqu's generosity, I was able to compare a genuine Fotodiox Pro adapter to the "Widepan" brand sold by Ebay HK retailers. (such as While they are slightly different, this difference is almost like pixel-peeping. In actual use, they seem the same. Both are aluminum, 2-piece, and give perfect infinity-focus. Both also give a tiny bit of rotational movement when installed, but this has yet to bother me at all, in actual use.

The Widepan is available from Ebay seller " buyitjnow " for price is $56 plus shipping.

THis may be a Widepan as well, (I'm not sure) for $50, delivered:

The Fotodiox Pro is around $90, IIRC.

There is also now a "Bower" brand that looks very similar, but I can't afford to keep experimenting right now. At $40, delivered, those might be worth trying:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Adapter-Fits-Canon-EOS-Body-To-Nikon-lens-F-AI-AIS-AF_W0QQitemZ360113609245QQihZ023QQcategoryZ30059QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262

The Novoflex supposedely has design issues.

The Camera Quest / Kindai may be superior (some say it's the same as the others) but it is just way too expensive to even consider, for me, since the Fotodiox-Pro type works great.

For chips, you can do as Justin suggests. Or, just get one of his chips and glue it on yourself.

There is also a new, user-programmable chip on the market. Sadly, it seems full of problems. Perhaps there is an Ebayer selling rejects, and the originals (more $$$) actually work, but I have yet to see any positive reports. See my thread on this chip:

The ebay adapters that I have had for Nikon to canon have all been way too thin and this causes infinity to overshoot by some significant margin. On Zooms and fixed lenses with internal or floating lens systems this has an adverse effect on the image quality.

I use more Nikon and Leica mount lenses on my 1Ds3 than Canon Lenses. Have used several adapters from Novoflex to E-Bay HappypageHK, the less expensive adapters I simply leave on the lens and purchase EOS rear lens caps. I have never felt a need for the extra expense of the "Focus Confirmation" adapters, the viewfinder of the 5D was fine for focusing, the 5D2 should be as good or slightly brighter from reports I have seen.

One word of caution using Nikon lenses, on quite a few Nikkor lenses there is a small tab on the rear of the lens that is designed to protect the rear element if the lens is set down on a flat surface without the rear lens cap. That tab protrudes far enough to prevent mounting the lens and if forced it will scratch the inside of the mirror box on the 5d. Simply look at the lens when the adapter is mounted and see if the tab protrudes past the rear of the adapter. If so, simply take a dremel tool and grind the tab off and the lens should mount fine.

thank you all very much for the helpfull information!

i'm currently mainly using the 14-24 and 24-70, which both are G lenses...so i think i'm going to go for the 16-9.net adapter, since that seems to be best adjusted to work with that type of lens...

all the best, Lucky

The $50 Ebay adapter in the link has split slot lens flanges as described by HansenTsang. The picture shows it quite clearly.
I thought the Fotodixo Pro adapter has the leaf spring type flanges, i.e., similar to those found on Canon camera bodies.
Am I mistaken?

Upon close inspection, I think you are right (about the $50 Bower adapter.) Probably NOT worth considering, after all.

The Widepan adapters from Buyitjnow, however, are just like the Fotodiox Pros. I own several. they are excellent.

If you look for cheap adapters on eBay stay clear from big_is. The adapter they sent me looked like it was machined by a 10 year old. The outer flange was almost totally destroyed and no way I was going to mount this frankendapter on my 5D. They still have not refunded my money and I am opening a Paypal dispute tomorrow. I have had good luck with eBay seller ericcc1006 though. Beautiful adapter and the AF confirm works like a champ!

I've purchased several types of lens adapters from Haoda. In the case of Nikon-to-EOS specifically, I prefer the adapters from Cameraquest. They are better made, fit better and have more accurate specifications overall. They also use the leaf-spring for tension as opposed to Haoda's cheaper cut out slot on the rim of the adapter.

Haoda does stand behind his products if there are problems, but I do believe you get what you pay for. The Cameraquest adapters are more than twice the price of the Haoda, but their design and build reflects that.
