OK, I give up. What am I doing wrong? My Mark III has the 1.2 firmware. I shoot with a high quality tripod and a remote. No IS. In 2.0 - 2.8, focus is sharp. (Hard not to get sharp pix at that dof) But if I extend to 4.0 or higher, I totally lose the sharp focus. If anyone can find what I'm missing here, I'd really appreciate the help.
Thanks all!
Another frustration: I'm subscribed to FM Forum image uploader, but it doesn't work. I keep getting a "nothing specified" message. My images are shrunk to around 600 k.
Not sure why you'd expect shots at f2 to be sharper than those stopped down, the exact oppposite is more likely. f2 to 2.8 is wide open on most lenses, with minimum depth of field.
If you are having trouble uploading here, do you have an accout at flickr or pbase or somewhere similar? Posting a web link will make the picture appear here.

Hi, David. Just one of many ways that I'm the opposite of normal. I'm jinxed or something. Ugh. I have no problem getting tack sharp photos in 2.0- 2.8.
Need more details. Do you mean that at close to wide open the images are in focus where you expect and as you stop down the focus shifts? Does it happen on more than one lens? What lens(es) are you using?
Maybe it's me, but I'm seeing not so much out of focus (although it does appear
to be focused behind the girl), but a lot of noise in the girls skin. Perhaps an
image showing the results of a wide open shot would help
Dave:
Your second version of the last post is better than the original. Seems you are trying to help.
The girl was my center focal point. Even in the ones where she is cropped to the thirds position.
I would also agree the focus point is behind the girl.
Interesting EXIF. Av mode, Av 1/50s (were you handheld?) Flash fired.
If you ask me, this isn't a problem with the 1D3, it is a problem with technique, or should I say, shutter speed, or lack thereof...! Plus I would say your flash hasn't lit the subject correctly either. This could partially explain why you do better wide open, because the shutter speed is higher thus the picture is sharper.
Can you explain in detail how you took the shot? Handheld? Tripod? One Shot or AI-Servo AF? Which focus point? Single, Single expanded or ring of fire?
Dan: Exactly the problem! What is going wrong here? When I shot it, she was in the center of the photo. I cropped it in the thirds position when I has resizing for the web. How am I losing the focal point? Knowing me, it is probably something simple that I'm missing.

Ed: Here is my web site with several samples of other shots.

Trying to patronise me really isn't the answer to actually getting help.
It is perfectly clear from my and the other postings that the shot is not focused correctly, You can either believe that or not. You clearly don't know how to use apertures and shutter speeds for best effect, or you don't know how to use the 1-Series
Honestly, a good book about photography, focusing and technique is the answer.
