just wondering if you take bird in flight hand held how do you hold the 1d mark ii ... do you prefer to hold the body through the Lens collar or should you hold the lens with body hands grip
kindly advise in such situations ... also on tripod will you place body on tripod or the lens.....
When shooting hand held, I remove the tripod collar. When using the lens on a tripod always mount the lens tripod collar to the tripod - the lens is too heavy and long to be supported with the body on the tripod without risking damage.
I use the appropriate grips on the right of the camera (portrait or landscape), and the left hand under the lens. The weight of the lens remains on the fat part of the hand opposite the thumb - up just short of the focus ring so I can "touch up" the focus when necessary with the thumb to the left of the ring and forefinger to the right. This hold also keeps that left elbow tucked in tight for additional stability.
I always leave the tripod ring on, and just rotate it out of the way when necessary. When walking, I find a comfortable location for the ring and use the foot to help cary the weight of the lens on my left hand.
My 400 always has a Arca-Swiss plate on it to attach the lens to a monopod or tripod - the rig is a bit long to support by the body - but you can in a pinch.
There's a learning curve re: long lens technique. If you'd prefer to start with more keepers I'd suggest foregoing the TC
until you're VERY comfortable with the 1D2/400 f5.6L in hand. Keep your shutter speeds up and practice!

Yes, except I don't have the collar on when hand-holding , I just cradle the lens in my left hand with the right on the grip. Otherwise you'll be wagging that lens all around trying to track a bird with one hand!
The collar is easy to remove, it has a quick release.
