I upgraded from CS3 to CS4 (Design Premium) and have had the opportunity to use ACR 5 and Photoshop. Before diving in, I watched the Deke McClelland series about what's new in Photoshop CS4 over on Lynda.com. I also watched serveral other tutorials and posted the links in an earlier thread. There is definitely some nice stuff in this upgrade. But, if you are an experienced Photoshop user on CS3, the upgrade may have a fairly minor impact on your workflow.

I agree with you, I have just got my upgrade from Adobe, some of the new stuff is very picky as to what image it will work with.

+3
I'll third those opinions. Like what was said, not a lot different then CS3 but with some nice to have items but not need to have upgrades.
One of my main reasons for the upgrade was the updating of ACR, which will be done in LR anyway. I just have to wean myself from upgrading PS everytime a new release comes out. I started with Elements 2 and switched to PS5 and upgraded all the way, so Adobe has gotten a lot of my money in upgrades
you are joking right!?. the support for 64 bit for one is a big plus as in unlimiting the memory allocation. in addition to finally supporting the use of the GPU in most circumstances (depending on your video card that is) unloads the CPU to do other functions faster like image rotation, zoom in/out and a lot more pixel level surgury. here is where having a upper end video card has its advantages other then high end video games games. i have a single nvidia 9800GT and life just got kicked up a notch at the screen. if $190 after 18 months is a big thing i suggest a more subdued hobby like marble collecting and even that can get pricey too.

Some of us just don't have the gear you have nor want to upgrade hardware for just zooming and rotating.
I have a 250 card on my laptop and 512 on my desktop and am lucky I can take advantage of the open GL. Some people will not want to upgrade hardware for those features. The OP was mainly talking about updated software features I believe. The zoom and rotating features are cute, but I don't see them as a major
time saver or upgrade, perhaps in your situation they are. It's a good upgrade but IMHO not major unless you do 3D.
Disclaimer: my main editing software is LR.

P.S. Strange thing, my laptop had problems with the openGL right after installation, but has worked great with no problems since. Cured itself I guess.

its just a bit more then zooming and rotating. its the pixel processing itself.
and i do look at the computer as as my darkroom so equipment there is as important as bodies, lenses, bags and accessories.
Sjims, I would have to completely agree with you. I have just installed cs4 tonight, and I do have to say that the boost I see is amazing. I am running vista x64 on a QX6850 with 8 gigs of ram,2 velociraptors and 2 8800's in SLI. CS3 was great and all, and CS4 for the most part is the same except for actually and FINALLY taking advantage of all the hardware I have. It was absolutely amazing to me how smoothly it ran on my machine.

for me its a write off...Show more →
So sorry, that we poor people from the UK have upset you, you see we pay twice what you do in the US for our upgrades so now I can only afford a very small marble collection.
have now got the 30 day trial, and have to say i'm not impressed. the refresh is non existant. if i apply a filter i have to zoom the pic slightly for the change to appear. this happens with a lot of things. i have to zoom or move the pic slightly to make the change appear. this doesn't happen with cs3, and is very annoying. also some of menus appear greyed out unless i click out and then click back to the menu. very odd, and not sure what to do about it. i shan't be paying to upgrade if this is how its going to be

I have this problem too. My main computer is quad core high end stuff 12weeks old so all should run well but does not.
