p.1 #1 · Fast EF-S primes?

Is there no demand for fast EF-S primes? I would have thought it would be easier and more cost effective for Canon to create smaller image circle lenses for this mount. It might (just maybe) even be cheaper for the consumer instead of having to shell out over $1k for the L calibre.

Am I alone in wondering why we don't see these marketed?

Canon's not losing any money upselling those consumers to more expensive L primes. I wouldn't expect to see much in EF-S primes from Canon unless some third-party manufacturer (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) leads the competition in this space.

I think Canon sees those that use EF-S as more entry level shooters that would prefer zooms, which is where they have put their development. I think they expect you to use EF primes if you need speed. Unless you need very fast UWA there are already fast cheap EF primes like the 35 f/2, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8. the 35 and 50 could do with updating. Also I don't see say a EF-S 24 f/1.4 being that cheap and not much smaller than a EF 24 f/1.4 and your restricted to croppers.

I'd prefer they updated their 20/24/28/35 non L primes and made a f/2 USM range that sat between the f/1.4L's and the existing f/1.8-f/2.8 range. Also upgrade 50 f/1.4.

Canon has pretty much got to do that one, or Sigma will eat their lunch (as soon as the bad reputation for early-production focus problems is forgotten). Perhaps even update the 50f1.2 back to a 50f1.0 with improved performance... I suspect the current 50L might also start losing sales to the Sigma 50f1.4.

And let's not forget the Zeiss ZE 50 f1/.4. My old Zeiss C/Y 50 f/1.4 is a great lens, ZE should be better.

My Macro EF-S 60mm is tack sharp, and super fast on my 20D. faster than just about any other prime on my 5D and 1DsMKII.

There are many non-L/cheap EF fast primes with excellent IQ, what else do you need?

Examples:

100/2.8 macro
85/F1.8
50/F1.4

How about some f/2 Wides. I have the 28mm f/1.8 and love it, but I'd love to see a fast 9-13mm EF-S. It'll never happen, but it would be cool.

There wouldn't be a great deal of savings on lens size or cost by making lenses specifically for smaller APS-C sensors. The size of the front element groups and aperture is related only to focal length and f-stop, not to image size at the sensor. It might reduce the size of the rear elements, but that's probably not enough to make a substantial diference in cost. As already mentioned, there's many excellent full frame primes available for very reasonable prices.

20mm f/2 for under £200 would be great.

I see a lot of images on here that I really like and they are shot at 35mm on FF. They are usually shot with the 35mm L prime and for us cropped body users the only option is a 10-22 at the long end. This gives a max aperture of 4.5 which just can't get close to the L prime's f/1.4.

So I would like something like the 35mm f/2 but at 20mm. Not too fussed on build quality just image quality.

Exactly. Not made by Canon, but it's the ultimate EF-S fast-prime, as far as I'm concerned. I was going to sell mine when I bought a 5D, but I just can't bring myself to get rid of such a wonderful lens.

Second on the Sigma 30mm! Love that lens. Razor thin dof and tack sharp.

I'd easily recommend this lens!

Personally, I don't see the demand. There are some great primes out there already. Primes, for the most part, are already pretty fast and light - hobbling them with a smaller image circle would have a probable reduction in weight and size - but to what end? I believe it just cuts off customers.

From an R&D side, lenses are quite involved and expensive to bring to market. There is also the point of an EFs prime competing with a FF prime. WIth the smaller customer base, and the overlap of FF vs. EFs primes, there would be no cost savings - the lens has to be able to pay for its production. The lens may end up costing the same as the "L" version due to lack of volume sales.

Look at what Canon did - they made some short zooms - some high quality zooms, at that, for the EFs mount - because the need for wide angle with the crop sensors. Outside of those zooms, EFs just does not exist.

Heh..I went through the same thing, I was about to sell my Sigma 30 1.4 and couldn't do it once I started looking through example pictures I was going to post in the listing.

EF-S Primes would be a wet dream for me! A 35mm EF-S would be awesome if it could be sold at an equal level to the 50mm 1.8. 50mm is just to long for most things on a crop body!

The 60 macro is one of the sharpest lenses I've ever used.

I keep thinking about this one, but the AF concerns keep scaring me away.

I think it was more of a "widest aperture" definition of speed and not a "speed of focus" definition.

That's not at all the only option for a field of view equal to a 35mm length lens on full-frame. The 17-55/2.8 at 22mm gives you 2.8 and some IS (which helps camera shake but won't stop action in low light). Also, the 16-35/2.8L also has you covered, or you could go for the Sigma 20/1.8 which is slightly wider.
