I'll vouch for the Sigma 30 1.4 like I always do. I usually shoot with a 24-70 so the 30 doesn't see much action except at night once in a while, but I love the look of everything wide open. It's like viewing a telephoto image, where your subject is in focus but everything else isn't. And yet you're looking at a normal field of view. I've never experienced any focus problems with the lens. I take that back, I have, but it's been my fault, not the lens'.

EF-S Primes would be a wet dream for me! A 35mm EF-S would be awesome if it could be sold at an equal level to the 50mm 1.8. 50mm is just to long for most things on a crop body!
So how about the Canon 35mm f/2? Siggy 30mm f/1.4? Canon 35mm f/1.4L?
You already have your EFs lenses you asked for! (except they're EF lenses...)
BTW, don't hold your breath for another $80 lens...

That's not at all the only option for a field of view equal to a 35mm length lens on full-frame. The 17-55/2.8 at 22mm gives you 2.8 and some IS (which helps camera shake but won't stop action in low light). Also, the 16-35/2.8L also has you covered, or you could go for the Sigma 20/1.8 which is slightly wider.
Thanks for your suggestions agentgraves.
I have recently been doing low available light stuff at parties/weddings with a 50mm 1.8 on my 400D. This combo is pretty small almost like a big P&S camera and has better control/high ISO performance than a P&S. I am pleased with the compact nature and low cost when I am out in the evening hence I have discounted the L primes and the 17-55IS lenses. I have no problem taking my 24-105L out during the day but after a few beers I'm better of with a cheap rig. The 35 f/2 maybe my next lens so I can go a bit wider and get small group shots, but a 20mm would be great. Do you have experience of the sigma 20mm

I had the Sigma 20mm and it was a total disaster! Super Soft wide open that did not clear up until you stopped it down alot. It also had bad QC as it was a bit 'de-centered'. I previously also had the Sigma 28mm f/1.8 but it also suffered from horrible softness @ wide aperatures. You can view similar results here (you'll have to cut/paste the full address):
