p.1 #1 · Testing the 50D this morning

A miserable day weather wise for my first shoot with the new body but that's Seattle for ya. I went back to the scene of my last Redtail encounter and I was thrilled to see him show up again just 15 minutes after I arrived. Some were shot at ISO 800 to test the new sensor Canon put in the 50D. I was pretty impressed with the low noise at 800 compared to my 40D. Here are a couple I've had time to process and most are High Key due to the perch he chose

This is a similar portrait pose to one of my 40D shots in the previous Redtail post

Darn Tom > Talk about CLEAN and SHARP

These shots really show the camera off well. Your hawk must be very tolerant to humans.
Are these crops or FF? If crops was the entire bird FF?

Nice series and Wowsa sharp

Thanks Ant, due to the junky weather I wanted to get as close as I could. This is a 1st year Redtail and has not developed a fear of humans yet. I could never get this close to an adult (believe me I've tried). I think I stumbled upon one of his prime hunting areas so I'm looking forward to seeing him again. I'd love to get some flight shots of him.

These are all very slight crops as I was almost to mfd of the 500. Here is the first frame I took of him this morning (ISO 800 f/7.1)

Thanks again for the kind words Ant

I think the shots look real good- crisp and lots of detail, despite the weather. The 15 mp's seem to come in handy as you crop in tightly. Not so sure what you mrean by high key?

All very good with great detail. Have you tried any bif yet? I'm sure I'm not the only one curious about the focus speed.
Thanx,
Ron

Paul, a highkey shot is any picture when the subject is darker than it's surroundings verses a lowkey is one where the subject is brighter than it's surroundings. His highkey shots were the ones where the sky was the background and was quite a bit brighter than the subject. Hope this helps.

Wow, Tom--these images will make you sit up and take notice. Incredible clarity.
You are not going to cost me some money are you? !
I'll be watching for more shots. BIF? What do you think?

Wow Tom, you may have just saved me some money. Have you tried higher ISO? I just got back from shooting in the same weather at 800, would have liked to go a lot higher to get the shutter up there. I have been wondering about the 50d vs mklll, higher iso than 40d is my goal. Any thoughts on that? These shots are wonderfully clear, well done.

Thanks Rob, I have NR shut off in the camera and I'm particularly impressed with the absence of noise on the first image. Especially at ISO 800

Thank you Tim. Here's a grab shot from across the field of a finch. 100% crop @ ISO 1600. Noise is present but not too shabby for 1600.
