I don't think it's possible for the camera to turn IS on or off since it's a physical switch on the lens. I read somewhere that using the built in mic you will pick up the IS noise. But, odds are, if you care about the audio quality, you'll be using an external mic and that should make it a non-issue.

5DII availability:

I see someone in LA was told end of Oct. or beginning of Nov. I was told the same by my Chicago Canon dealer. So this may be Canon USA's current estimate.

Sorry if this has been already posted. Too much non-5D stuff in this thread for me to keep up.

The Leica S2 camera seems like it's going to be a luxury toy. I can't see it anywhere in the pro studio or as a workers' camera like hasselblad, mamiya, leaf, etc. (I bet itll cost the same amount anyways). If it 'is' meant to be more "compact" as the MF digicams but with similar IQ, for on-location/outdoor shoot, pros with expensive pro MF cameras usually bring truckloads of equipment anyways defeating the purpose of a super expensive compact MF.

Well, he had a few buddies who knew what they were doing.

I'm most impressed by the making of the movie piece that was shot with an XH A1. The cuts to the 5DII scenes make the that camcorder camera look like crap.

Is there still a working link to a 1080p version of the movie?

I'm a little puzzled about the huge attention given to the video thing; i was never interested in video and still i'm not. But it seems like a huge number of photographers are into it a lot and they were waiting for a video SLR. I just don't get it...
I DO understand what this camera can do for a videographer or cinematographer, but really, i enjoy taking stills a lot and it's a very different thing than video footage. As far as taking stills this is just a little more than more megapixels, but as a photographic tool, not much

The video thing is a game changer, especially for wedding/event and sports photographers!! This will be about as revolutionary as the coming of digital! The 5DII is not for videographers, it's for a new generation of photographers. Photography as a profession changed last week.

As for image stabilization during video. It works.

If you add the feedback from the "Bebbs", from Laforêt and from Michaël Reichmann, of Luminous Landscape, and their video clips, it establishes to my satisfaction that, under the right conditions, the 5DII' video capabilities are indeed game-changing. And, though not yet totally conclusive, they suggest that the low light capability and IQ are first-class, or better.

The low lights video scenes look like they came from a camera of which the matte box costs $3000.

I guess RED users see some smearing in individual frames. RED may be better in that regard, but RED footage doesn't look as good in low light.

The way I look at it is that I would pay full list for the 5DII even without the video. Considering we're even talking about RED indicates just how interesting many of us find these new capabilities.

Well, I think video is just great. I am serious. It is the game changer. Although, I wouldn't know, since I'm not going to buy this camera.

What is so great about it? The fact it creates a sorely needed differentiator, allowing Canon NOT to create a perfect camera and keep its profits by selling different lines of bodies.

What do I need? I don't care for megapixels, and the sensor noise level/sensitivity of 5D are fine with me. The autofocus isn't. I want a 3D-style camera, with good autofocus, while not paying 1D-series price. And now, thanks to the video feature it may become a reality.

5DII: Rather mediocre AF, BUT video feature at 30 fps, and semi-decent mike.
3D: Pro autofocus, no video, some weather sealing
1D Pro AF, Pro video (selectable 30 24 or even 60 fps, pro audio inputs), full weather sealing.

The new Leica S2 has just ONE AF assist point.

Which is one more AF point than any Leica has had before.

What I hope is that the Leica S2 has the same effect on the market that the Leica II had: To spawn an entire genre of further innovators and imitators.

The video thing is a game changer, especially for wedding/event and sports photographers!! This will be about as revolutionary as the coming of digital! The 5DII is not for videographers, it's for a new generation of photographers. Photography as a profession changed last week.

What changes the game is that it validates high-level video capability in a still camera. If only the Nikon D90 had it, that could be viewed as an industry one-off, but with both major manufacturers involved, it becomes a must-have feature.

I'm sorry is this the Leica thread or 5DMKII thread? I thought we had an alternative gear forum for non-Canon cameras and gear.

HELLO!! if everybody follow the trend of Leica and start making MF portable SLR all the prices of the current lenses that you own are going to DROP badly, that mean the thousands off $$$$ in investment that you have on lenses, GONE,
Full Frame is WAY enough, they can make 2.0X or 3.0X sensors if they want but not larger than FF,

Very good question indeed. I can't see how the gyro won't be heard, especially when it first fires up. Surely the sound would travel though the body and be heard even if there was ambient noise.

I understand what you are saying, but sometimes it helps one-brand aficionados to look up some other systems such as 24 Mp Sony, 37 Mp Leica, 60 Mp Phase One, etc in order to hopefully get a better sense of where Canon fits performance- and cost-wise in the digital camera world.

We are trying to establish what the "crippled" under $3,000 5D II has to offer that the $30,000 Leica S2 does not offer e.g. 9 AF points vs 1 AF point, HD video vs no video, 60 lenses vs 6 lenses, etc.

For $30k, this seems like a risky investment. I'd much rather put my money into an open system such as a Phase One back and Mamiya or Hassy Body.

Out of interest guys, if I got a 5D2 and wanted to buy an external microphone, are these expensive or very big? (I admit in advance that I know absolutely NOTHING about video!).

Don't remember where I read it but yes, during recording apparently the IS does get engaged and stays on.

Linda,
Normally the IS gets activated when you AF the camera, or meter, depending on how you have your camera setup. It does require physical input to the camera. Canon could very easily turn it on in firmware, but I don't think the IS in the lenses was ever designed to run for an hour and a half(low res video limit). This would really chew up the battery too! We will see!

Any price, any size. You need to define what you're doing. The sound from the on-camera mic should be worse than a camcorder. I bet we will see some innovative third party mics for this camera if it catches on.
