Just checked one of the biggest on-line stores here in Scandinavia
5D 21495 clams
5D2 23495 clams

Note, I find the Mk2 price excellent compared to the Mk1...

Funny, this very early indicator was right all along about the camera finally coming out this year and it being called 5D mkII as opposed to all the other possible monikers. Sorry if this has been posted before.

WebDog -
those are euro-clams right :-)
Actually, a lot of us bought the 5D for only $2,100 new...not too long after they 1st came out. Canon had a nice rebate promotion where you could stack 2-3 items and increase the rebate.

Canon has been notorious for the slow pace of fulfilling rebates, etc. Is that a myth?

I have sent in rebates and it took quite a while. I also sent in two for two flashes I bought once and they only rebated one, which was wrong but they had the paper work. I had copies but never got the second rebate.

I've done 3 now with zero problems...usually get the check within a month.
I always make copies of all the paperwork and cut-outs...and send the requested info in via certified mail.

I think top of the line may turn into a heavy duty version of the middle line. A maturing market drives prices down, assuming no major sensor technology improvements.
Your 1DsIII may be expensive, but to date you have been able to take 100% more shots than the 5DII. Who knows, maybe Canon will give 1D owners a coupon on the IV series.

Unfortunately the theory that a maturing market drives prices down hadn't been passed on to Canon when they released the MkIII's at the same price as the bodies that they replaced. I don't regret buying mine but I do wince now and again. In terms of the coupon for a IV... it would be nice but I won't be holding my breath.

You already have one of those. Why would you want another?

Oh my, it's no problem to involve any issue with Canon or Canon service in a 5DmkII master thread is it? Paperwork, cash back, rebates, etc. Especially if it spoils our EOSfun we have from our new baby isn't it? Didn't you get it: it's new-born-baby-party-time here? You're not supposed to tell the baby is ugly, but how sweet it smells and soft its skin is. Our talented 5DmkII is going to have a great future and we don't want to hear all that critique now Save it for the time of teething troubles or its first schooldays, but not now!

I didn't say I wanted a small pro body with all pro features. I would like small full-frame body with improved AF. Would sacrifice many of the bells and whistles ( weathersealing, 21MP, video) for that type of camera. Nikon happens to make exactly such a camera, the D700, and I think it's totally appropriate to talk about it in this thread. I am not interested in switching systems, but if Canon made something equivalent, I would buy it. Thanks.

Exactly. What good is ISO 6400 or 12800 if the lens just hunts back and forth and gives up? They had 3 years to recognize that all 9 AF points are stuck in the middle and didn't, but at the same time put 9 reasonably well placed cross points in the 40D and 50D. Do these guys even use their own cameras in lower light?

If I wanted a video camera, I'd buy one. I would certainly buy a video camera with more than a 12 minute max record time. I would have ABSOLUTELY NO objection to a 16MP FF camera with well placed cross sensors and ISO 6400+ priced at $3000.

I shoot weddings, and I am frustrated with my 1dm2 because of slow AF response times in poorly lit reception halls. Yeah, that's right - in good light my 1dm2 blows me away, but in piss-poor light I miss enough shots to be annoyed. I'm not going to play a $4000 lottery with a mk3, and the 5dm2 has the same stupid AF as the original 5d.

If you look at the 1DS or any other FF camera, the points are all grouped in the middle too. There's a comparison, and the points aren't much farther out. I think it's some kind of limitation with the mirror and the size of the AF array or something.

Is it the placement or the ability to focus. I would like a wider spread, that is for sure but the new focus has all cross with 45 degree at the center.

It's probably that. Too many here sound like unloving fathers who just hate to take their responsibility taking care of the kid and changing diapers. They seem to believe that the baby in the other cradle (D700 tag around the toe) doesn't shit at all.

, that was a good one.

I already have had enough kids. No more diapers, well ok, maybe one more time. :^)

The Canon Japan 5DII website seems to indicate that only the center point is a cross sensor and that the other eight points are horizontal sensitive, which to me sounds like they are not cross sensors.

Here's the exact Canon quote: "Nine AF points — eight horizontal-line sensitive at f/5.6 and one cross-type, vertical-line sensitive at f/2.8 — combine with six invisible Assist AF points to provide speedy and precise focusing of even fast moving subjects."

From here: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos5dm2/02.html#04

It does not puzzle me why Canon did this. Just as they've done in the past, it's to segment the market and leave enough of a marketing difference between the 5DII and the eventual 1DsIV, which must be coming relatively soon. There is no way Canon will produce a $2600 21MP camera and leave the top end of their pro line undercut feature-wise for a long time.

I'm very curious to see what Canon will do with the 1D(s) series to justify maintaining a ~$5000 price point. It'll have to be one hell of a camera, but then, Canon with their incremental upgrades could still disappoint...

Ron

There is a post from the second reviewer (andy?) at dpreview that said he had the camera in hand and it definetly does not have 9 cross type. There was Canon documentation that said "nine cross type" but that was a mistake, I guess.

Still a little hope, but I think its only the center AF point.

From my understanding, it does have six helper (non-selectable) af points. So it's not the same as the 5DI.
