I find that the 50D having all Cross Point AF is hilarious. Its as if two teams were working on both bodies and one didn't take into account what the other was doing. So you essentially have a camera with an important feature that has been awkwardly gimped. This wouldn't be as big an issue if the 50D didn't have the better AF setup.

Canon USA's Westfall says the reason for that is the "6 Assist AF points plus center point were deemed to provide a higher level of performance for AI Servo AF than the center point-only arrangement of the [40D and] 50D." The Chuckster is really digging deep here.
What he's saying is that if you can't hold the AF point on target, the assist points help.
But I think for how this camera is used we would rather have nine crosstype to help focus in lowlight. This isn't a sports camera.

I must tell you, this one is probably my luckiest Photokina ever. Nothing new that would tempt me to dip into my modest gear allowance.

* The 24L I've got already and perfectly happy with it.

The cropper is no substitute for the big sensor!!

Realistically, my 40D can't quite match my 5D Mk 1 in terms of IQ, though it does have some nice features. I'm anxious to see what the new 50D can do. It's high-ISO capability looks promising.

Hey, maybe we can hit 10,000 pages on the "Official 5DIII Rumor Thread" before the official release date!

Tommy, that's also what medium format users probably say about the 35mm FF.

Well, if at least the center AF point works well even in low light, one can use the extra megapixel abundance for cropping. With the top 25% cropped, the center point is on the 2/3 line.

Edit: But then to get it in the corner, one needs to crop another 25% of the remaining pixels...

The 5Dll only has a 150,000 cycles on the shutter, how bad is that? I don't think it will even make it around Disney world never mind sea world. It might make a good backup camera for the 1dslll for another six months, before I sell it at a phenomenal profit of $4500.

You have to be kidding. Someone is shooting too much if 150000 clicks doesn't pay for itself. And remember a shutter replacement is not exactly an expensive repair. Been shooting weddings with my 5D's for 3 years nearly and never had a shutter problem...or any for that matter.

Gene,

Can you please post a link to the reports that you state? I don't buy it.

Which part?

I don't have any specific links, I read a LOT of threads and posts and info from many sources that I can't remember.

As for digic IV improving focus speed and accuracy I believe I gleened that from a 50D forum. The much increased processing power allows AF calculations to be performed much faster. Inititial reports from a wildlife photographer in Sweden or Norway or some other cold European place

I believe Shutterbug, when reviewing a competing camera to the 5D or another Canon, mentioned that the 5D was one of the fastest low light focussing cameras they've used.

And others I can't remember.

Gene

Wow, you really take more than +10,000 shots in one trip? Are you archiving every point of view in Disney World?

Yeah, I was originally thinking of getting a 5D mark 2, but now the 50D is looking like maybe a better choice. The effective reach with a 70-200 and 15 MP will be pretty nice.

Yes, I too want those but if it will cost much more then I might not get it or go for the 1DsMkIII.

I read that this is inevitable for video capture using CMOS = shutter-rollover. P&S cameras dont have this problem in video mode because they have CCD sensors.

http://s477.photobucket.com/albums/rr134/jamesmel9/?action=view¤t=DSC_0012.flv

That will suck if the 5dii video are like that. Such hi IQ crisp capture without being able to pan or move the camera

Sorry if this is an obvious question but I am not a Canon user. Does the 5D have the ability to store multiple camera setting profiles, so that I can switch my custom settings by choosing a different profile bank i.e. moving from a mode that I defined as Point and Shoot (Perhaps this has Auto ISO enabled) to another mode that i have defined to be for Landscape Purposes (Color profile with more saturation etc..)

I don't know all the particulars, but in general, yes. The original 5D, which I have, has 1 custom setting in which your settings are automatically set. The new 5D Mk II will have 3 such settings so you can preset and save your settings (Av, mirror lockup, ISO, etc.) for future use.

I was just getting caught up in the " this camera isn't good enough" vibe that was going on. For $2500 the 5D is an amazing camera. 21mp's with new processor is so good we wouldn't have thought this was possible even a year ago. If the quality is even close to the MKlll, this takes Canon to another level. Like I said before, this is one fantastic back up camera that also can shoot high quality video and in many cases is a primary hi-res camera that anyone who needs light weight and hi-res images. I'm very excited about this camera.

(Holy crap, text wall intro!)

"'5D,' that is, a digital single lens reflex camera with a 35mm full size sensor at the core, that rapidly brought the power to carve expression into a single frame to a whole new level.
Now, with a 21.1MP full frame CMOS sensor at its heart, and with the DIGIC 4 engine to complement it, it has evolved into the new 5D. To capture every bit of light, even when encountering an overwhelming landscape.

'5D,' now a 'Mark II.'"

(Had to screen cap that, because I didn't realize that the damn thing fades)

Under the big huge blue 5D: Something about the release date being slated for somewhere in the last ten days November
Under that: Experience the 5DII before it hits store shelves! We will be holding Premium annoucement events! (or something like that)

And all that shebang right above this sentence is a link, which says:

NIHON-IRO (Japan-Colour)
Something poetic about how Japan's landscape is an ever-changing palette, how that is Nihon-Iro, and how with the 5D Mk. II in hand, people will be able to capture this Nihon-Iro according to their vision. "What kind of Nihon-Iro will you see?"

For those who don't want to read through my crappy attempt at translating it:

-In stores: last ten days of November (is this world-wide? didn't say)
-Advance hands-on demonstrations if you'd like to go to Japan to touch a 5DII, free of charge (the plane ticket isn't, though)
-If you want me to try translating more, ask.

EDIT: Moar, moar, moar!

Photos & Movies
Photos: self-explanatory... ISO 100-6400, DIGIC 4, 21.1MP CMOS 35mm sensor...

Movies:
1&2: Demonstration of lens bokeh
3&4: Demonstration of the unique shots capable because of the wide range of EF-mount lenses
5&6: Demonstration of low sensor noise

surely there is an improvement in AF per sensor...even if its a 1 stop improvement still an advancement
