p.245 #1 · Canon 5D Mark II master thread

I just got my 5DmkII and I am really very exitied I think its the best companion to my perfect AF working 1DMkIII and I have to admit a few things
1) 5DmkII AF has nothing to do with my old 20D that was about the same with 5D 1st edition. Its more accurate easily manageble and workable for static and moving subjects. I have made some tests to see that on moving subjects.
2) Iso I have nothing to say about that its just the camera I needed it and its really so good. Even in 12500 it seems quite usable.
3)Flash Utilisation and Match is perfect (used 580 EX)
4)the feel of the camera is very good better than a XXD series and so close to MarkIII except from the weight and the grip which is best for markIII
5)I did like the new Lifeview version which has very usefull fascilities
6)HD video recording with stereo Audio at 44.1Khz 16bit. Well I have to admit that I did not waited to be so good. Using my 24-70 2.8L the QoV was so good that I am ready to go out to take some very good video clips of the massive attack of the Police to students here in Greece (but on second thought this is a cleary MarkIII job maybe I will try it and I will inform for the HD video). Also it was a surpise to me the Audio quality that was definately very good.
7)LCD was that it supposed to be for a long time. I did n't like the speed of response of the screen and also the zoom in response at full resolusion.

Conclution I am happy that I had preordered that camer from Octomber and also I am happy that I got it at the price of 2700 (including TAX)

Nice try but its a quite draft way to solve problems by saying to solve that caused in that situations just 1st avoid that situation (use RAW/JPG format).

The usefull info is that if in sRaw1,2 the highlight tone priority has some software flaws those they will be solved in the next firmware revision.

The good news is that there is no problem in normal Full Raw pictures

I think it is very positive that Canon are reading the forums and actually admitting there are problems.

To Owners of the EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
2. Vertical banding noise

We are currently investigating and analysing the causes, and examining measures to reduce or eliminate these phenomena by providing correction firmware. An announcement will be made on www.canon-europe.com as soon as measures have been determined.

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur are as follows.

1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or if extremely large prints of the images are made.

2. Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
▪ Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
▪ Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
▪ Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.

Canon apologizes for any inconvenience caused and thanks photographers for their patience.

i also sincerely thank (no cheek intended) the early adopters for identifying these phenomena.

i'm glad there are brave souls that act as biofilters for photographic bugs.

It's nice to now see 5DII images with good chroma noise reduction in Lightroom 2.2. I never liked how DPP handled noise.

I should point out that the 5D II is FAR FROM PERFECT. Yes, I see quite a bit of noise - and I honestly do not think or expect it to be better than the D3, D700 and D3X .... but I am quite happy with it. And yes, the AF is only as good as the 5D (a far cry from the Nikons) but I can live with that .... and I still think it's a steal for $2,700. No way I would switch to Nikon.

While you may have used and done detailed comparisons in order to come up with your opinion, I have not.

I can only comment on use of the 5D2 and comparison to the 5D. So far, the images of the 5D2 are strikingly better.

The AF works extremely well and fast...and appears, in extremely low light, to be much "surer" than the 5D. I have not yet tried it in "sports mode" to compare that, but neither camera was designed for that, but I got a good number of keepers with the 5D...you just need to know what the camera can do and what it can't.

In addition to the IQ, I have nothing but praise for the user interface, which includes 'LiveView'. It is a quantum jump over the 5D and I would be surprise if Nikon was better....or even as good. It is worth buying just for this.

my 2 cents....John

Times change....it will be interesting what the price point of the 1DsMarkIV will be. If they follow the Nikon D3X, we can all yell and scream

Guys, stop saying that a 5D Mk II is a steal at $2700. Canon may be reading.

I'm waiting very impatiently for Mr. UPS to bring me mine.

No, I have not done any kind of test at all - just shooting indoors at the Christmas tree and the 4 walls in my bedroom. I don't see it to be "strikingly better" .... but it's good to hear that you do. At this point, I am more impressed by the features than by its IQ .... but I have not tested or compared it against my 5D .... yet. I hope you are right. I do like it a lot - even if the AF and IQ is only as good as the 5D.

Nice Shots! However, on the last two photos, plain as day, are examples of the black dots.... Oh no wait, that's the hockey puck. Nevermind! :-)

It's a steal, sure thing, and Canon will be coming out with a Mark III with the Video Auto Focus in May. The 5D Mark II is manual focus when shooting video.

Well keep in mind that no ENG broadcast video camera has Auto Focus so I really do not think that a FF DSLR camera is missing autofocus for video.
