Twice the MP means
- at least twice the memory usage (depends on processing)
- CF card capacity virtually divided by 2
- twice the storage space (disk)
- twice the time to process the image (more: depends on algos)
- twice the time to transfer the image etc...
So the MP is an important point that has to be considered as well.
Bookmark your post and look back to it three years from now. It will look silly you resisted against progress. Or even better: show this post to your wife now! She will help you remind you don't need the new camera! In the meantime make a resolution: have EOSfun

I have to say it leaves me a little underwhelmed. Probably a great sensor - but it's lacking as an all-around performer.
There's also the fact that I'd probably have to buy a new computer to deal with any more than one file at a time.
I think I said on the build-up thread. Great for doing really big prints of slow moving things in the dark (manually focused apparently).
Again Canon seems to deliver the least Camera they can to send you up the food chain - it's getting old fast.
Is it me or does Nikon just seem to understand photographers better? Or maybe that takes a higher priority to marketing.
Having said that I'd love one, not sure I can justify it though, maybe as the price dips after the initial sales rush fades. ...Show more →
Im not trying to start a flamewar I want an honest opinion....
What more do people want from this camera that they aren't seeing? The only thing I see people wanting are features the 1 series has. Come on folks something has to be missing for there to be a reason to buy the 1 series over the 5 series.

I disagree. EOSfun comes from making good images, whether it's with a 15MP, or 3MP, a Leica or a Holga. That's the PHOTOfun.
We are seeing the greatest event ever for photographers, the long overdue price drops for DSLR cameras. The $8000 every two years is now been effectively cut in half !!!!!!!!!!
The 5D2 will make a great backup camera for the MK3 and in many cases be better. We no longer need to buy the flagship cameras when they hit the street, but just wait six months until the new baby brothers arrive. The 2 1/4 guys will have to get their prices down so we can jump to them for studio work.
1) Larger files, cards, computers.
2) Much longer time to post process (21MP, 14bit RAW). Great for billboards though.
3) A movie camera in disguise, but what about sound? Are we supposed to hold a 4 pound camera + lens with arms outstretched? Seems like a form of torture.
4) All new batteries... New and improved battery (incompatible with old one) that delivers 850 shots or 1.5
5) The merging of P&S tricks into a professional body. Live View, head detection (whatever), movies, and more, but no in-camera flash. I guess the in-camera flash trick just isn't very professional.

So are you guys having EOSfun with the specs of this new baby?
I think you'd better read back through the previous 18 pages for your answer. Your suggestion of abundant 'EOSfun' has quickly morphed into 'EOSsniff'...

You don't seem to get it. It's pure logic. No pixels, no good images, so no pixels, no EOSfun. Leica or Holga may make PHOTOfun, but even though EOSfun is PHOTOfun any PHOTOfun is no EOSfun. Leica fro example is exactly the opposite from EOSfun. LeicaNAG is EOSfun Because snob cultproduct vs effective photofun tool Anyway, to me not very interesting this kind of logic reasoning, just wanted to put things straight. Still I wish you'll have the real EOSfun!

I'm with you ocean. A 16 megapixel version with a better AF system would have been preferable for most. I would have a hard time choosing. But I'll probably spend a lot of my time using face detection.

Pixels EOSfun, pixels. There is no substitute for pixels. Megapixels means million pixels. That's becoming a commonly misused term. Sensors have pixels on them, not megapixels. They aren't interchangeable terms. Sorry, just a little pet peave. And I do agree with you.
And to those complaining about too many pixels, YOU CAN SHOOT AT LESS THAN FULL RESOLUTION. Ya gotta love that.
Overall, price considered I like this camera. Really anxious to see the 1DMark 3 successor though.

I know Jeff, I read a few nag posts. I predicted this in advance. A lot would be disappointed even though I can't see why. There is so much EOSfun in this tiny high res photomachine... The gearheads that wanted a 7D D700 substitute with all the bells and whistles well they probably are never going to be satisfied. Not even if Canon rebadged a D700 with an EF mount
Off topic but I just watched the worst act of stupidity ever....
A co-worker recently bought a 1Ds Mark III purely for the megapixels and just smashed it on the floor after reading about the 5D Mark II in the email I sent the "camera people"...wtf! AND I HAVE NO WAY TO TAKE A PICTURE CAUSE MY CAMERA IS BACK IN THE STATES *CRY*
Not to mention it looks like he has the 85 1.2 attached that suffered most of the damage but hes yelling and throwing stuff so I'm not going into that office. I think I just witnessed a mental breakdown....
In order to get the most out of your EOSfun pixels, you got to have some matching EOSfun features. And not some brushed up 3 year old AF. You promised me something better EOSfun...

I think it's within 12 months. Maybe 6 months. I doubt they are still making 1DsIII sensors.
But many of us have been wrong when expecting Canon to hurry up.
They have not been impressive since 2005. The new one series in 2007 are great cameras, but didn't break new ground. There were no unexpected features.

It's you that I don't get. And don't tell me I can't understand your logic.
If your EOSfun is about counting pixels, good for you but I prefer my PHOTOfun. Leica's are no snob products btw, but probably you've never had WTFfun with them so you class them in whatever category you dislike.
PS : I still have fun with my sub 10MP cameras, and film.
