I think the concern with taking images on beta software is that the images may have a lot of debug data attached that hackers would just jump up and down over seeing.
I got to shot with the 5d mark II last night for about 15minutes. I even shot some video. I am glad that I preordered it, and cannot wait for it to come it

from that I am hearing 5DII needs firmware debugging as high noise banding is always software issues and rarerly hardware.
Interesting but it's not necessarily software. Just about any of Canon's DSLR's which run on 7.4v batteries will create banding which is most pronounced in AI Servo/AI Focus mode on certain lenses (and each of these lenses can have a part replaced to assist in suppressing that sort of banding).
Edit: The firmware has reportedly been locked down for 3 weeks now anyway.

Yeah, I thought the same thing about rescue software when I read the original post.
But regarding using other cards, card choice is more important with the 5D MkII than any other Canon DSLR (mainly due to requirements of LiveView/movie mode). Whilst I have been told the minimum spec CF card for that is Class 4 UDMA, nobody seems 100% sure yet and people will be wanting to try their cards to see whether they need upgrading for this body. Maybe the guy who didn't look so technically inclined is aware of this and let other CF cards be used for this reason (or maybe your first guess was the correct one!)...Show more →
I thought we may have a few retail deliveries the end of this week. Oh well. I also thought the camera would be out in October.
I'm assuming the best case timing of delivery is delayed due to firmware. So the total number of cameras made this year should not change. It seems demand will be high. Those waiting for Red to announce now know they won't be getting a dslr replacement from that company.

It does seem there will be more to find out about this camera than just about any previous Canon dslr. I've just ordered one big CF card for video. I'm going to wait to order more.
We'll also need to see about the best way to edit this video. I'm curious about how well video can be manipulated. What we haven't heard about yet is video being shot with lower contrast and color and manipulated in post.

There hasn't been a "delay."
C'mon, a new DSLR is almost never available at the moment it's announced at a trade show. It's common for it to take from six months to a year to hit the shelves after a trade show announcement (if it ever does).
Canon is better than anyone else in usually getting cameras to the dealers within 60 days of announcement.
Can anyone recommend a UK retailer for 5Dmk2 at around £1700 price ? I have found one place but its not going to have them in until December the 16th which frankly sucks.
Why do people keep complaining about the "delayed" shipping? It seems like every forum, there are a bunch of folks up in arms b/c of some "delay". Was it all the speculation from people with no/bad information announcing shipments occurring in October? It just seems odd that people claim Canon has delayed shipping by keeping to their original statement regarding the release date (assuming, of course, they ship by the end of November.)

Matt
i think they hoped it would arrive about a month earlier than the stated "by" date since many other canon bodies have and many were tired enough that it took so long for the 5D to be updated and realized that the fall landscape, wedding, and sports seasons would soon be over and were getting more and more anxious for it it to arrive before the end of those and the slow season so it feels like a very late and delayed arrival.
i know myself the cam wouldve been a good deal more useful to me had it arrived a month or two earlier. far more so. and i am entertianting some thoughts about putting it off for a while now, not sure.

I still don't get what the rush is all about. If Canon hadn't come with this now, everyone would still be happily clicking away
but not everyone has a FF cam yet and not everyone wants to spend money on something older like a 5D at this point in time (which has even less of the things they want in a camera too, it's definitely less general purpose than the 5dmkii, although even that is not quite as general purpose as some wished for)
and some events won't happen again for 12 more months and some people migh tno longer have access to them in 12 months and would've liked to have captured them with a 5dmkii.
so i think these are a few of the many reasons why
but technically it is not late per the "by the end of novemeber statement" if that is what you go by

"Technically," sheesh, there's nothing technical about it. If I schedule a location photography session for a Thursday, it's going to take place on Thursday. I won't be held responsible for the bruised feelings of a client who thinks I should have been there on Wednesday.
When has Canon or anyone else ever delivered a camera a month earlier than they stated?
They said "...end of November." "End of November" does not mean "October" in any language or country (if anything, "end of November" could mean "halfway through December" in a lot of places).
Anyone who set his heart on anything earlier just needs to get a grip on reality.

If I'd been born 30 years earlier, I could have photographed World War II. Things happen when they happen.
I just pre-ordered mine. I'm not really sure why I did it. I'm not a pro, I'm not even a good amateur. I guess I've run my 20d long enough and after my motorcycle accident, had some money that I wasn't going to use to buy another bike so why not an over expensive camera (for my needs). I will say, I am stoked.
If you have only just pre-ordered then I wouldnt hold much hope. I have just finished ringing around a lot of shops checking to see if they have anything in stock / when they will do / and how many people are on the pre-order list. To be honest in the UK its a bit of a joke trying to get hold of one.
Even though I am number 40 on one of the pre-order lists, I'm still not likely to get one until the end of January. It makes me angry that every shop that I have spoken to has gone for the pre-order list system, meaning that all the cameras are sold already to the hardcore fanatics. Meanwhile everyone else gets told to sod off and wait.
I am seriously starting to consider not going for a 5Dmk2 or 5D and returning to the original idea of getting a 40/50D again. They are so much cheaper (and from what I hear the 40D is considered to be sharper than the 50D in some cases). This doesn't set the 5Dmk2 in good stead considering its build on similar tech.
Even though I saved a long time for the new 5D I am now tempted to go for the cheaper body and spend the money on glass.
Here's one thing most seem to have forgotten: Lots of people have pre-ordered in more than one place and will give up spots in their second or third store when the first says "come and get it". This may free up enough cameras so that you get one sooner than you think.

40D for one came out a month before the "release by" date, usually canon builds in some safety margin so they wont be late if something pops up last minute.
yes they do, but just giving reasons why some people are so about it.
and honestly it is kind of late in arriving, they did sit on the 5D pretty long, even in one of the canon interviews they themselves said they were sorry they didnt get things going so it could have at least been ready when the 50D was, nevermind earlier
