NR is turned on as default both in-camera and in DPP. If you process a raw file in this manner it will show less noise than with the default settings turned off. The only problem is you lose detail at these default settings. The 40D didn't have default NR in-camera or in that version of DPP.

My guess is they are doing the same thing with the 5DMKII and the real results will only be obtained when you can turn NR off both in-camera and in DPP.

Jim

It's always turned on by default. That's true of almost every camera.

The point I'm making is that when compared to the previous models, where NR is also turned on by default, it's 1 to 1.5 stops better. It's not just better when compared to the 40D with NR turned off.

Under the same conditions of use!!!

That the magic term.

NR is not turned on by default on the 40D but it is on the 50D and that is my point!

Have you compared the two together? I have and if you turn the NR default off on the 50D vs the 40D, which NR is turned off by default, then the noise is about the same.

If you leave the NR default setting on then the 50D will have less noise than the 40D but with detail loss as result when compared to the 50D file with the default NR setting turned off.

Canon's claim was that the Noise levels were 1 - 1 1/2 stops better on the 50D than the 40D and every comparison I have made shows it is about the same, with all settings about equal - no NR. The only way I have been able to come close to even a 1 stop difference is with in-camera NR on and NR on in DPP for the 50D and NR turned off for the 40D.

My original statement was in regards Canon's claim that the 5DMKII's level of noise improvement over the original 5D would be 1- 1/12 stops better. My concern is this claim is similiar to that of the 50D vs the 40D which I have found to be far from the truth.

Jim

If that's true, then we would have to watch it. But from what I've been reading about the 50D, the IQ is said to be much better. I haven't compared the two yet myself. My plan is to replace my daughters 40D with the 50D in the next couple of months, and my 5D with the mkII shortly after.

I would wait until people can see and compare RAW images from the 5D2 before reaching any conclusions. We have no idea what kind of NR the JPG engine is doing.

I posted a link to RAW files on the last page. There's about 6 or so at varying ISO's in the zip file. However DPP 3.4.x won't open them. Not sure about 3.5.1

I've been following this a bit and I'm with Jim on this noise issue. It looks a little like a shell game Canon is playing with these new models--NR settings to get better results. I think they should be compared on equal grounds. I'm liking my 50D, the cropping latitude is great but noise appears no better then the 40D.

I want this new 5D NOW.

Inasmuch as Canon's lens design spec for the EF mount precludes them from designing lenses that would strike the mirror, I doubt they'd go to any time and expense to redesign the mirror mechanism to avoid a problem that could not happen with any of their EF lenses.

Dear RDKirk, thanks for responding, but of course my question was not if Canon deliberately made the 5D II ready for use with old MF lenses made by other brands. I was wondering if anybody had any knowledge if it accidentally would be more space for lenses that are known to interfere with the 5D mirror. The 1Ds series have less problems with this, and the 5D I is notorious for its mirror problems for users of alt lenses. But I will rather post the Q in alt...

RE: 5D Mark II availability. I just received an email from J&R informing me that they would be unable to place my name on a notification list for contact once the new 5D becomes available. They sugest that I buy a NIKON. Are they crazy

They already have too many people on the waiting list to have a chance of fulfilling your order in a reasonable amount of time. They are not crazy. They have the Nikon in stock and want your money now!

No, they are not! They are just trying to make a sale. They can see that there is a long waiting list for the 5D Mk II and you are not likely to get it until December or January if you order it now - so chances are that you will cancel your order with them and look elsewhere. Rather than let you go, they are trying to reel you in now and sell you the closest thing to a 5D II .... and that would be D700. Makes sense?

Maybe this has already been answered in the 2706 posts in the thread, but anybody has any knowledge about if the new 5D has a mirror box / mirror position more likely to not have the mirror hit the rear glass of some protruding old alt lenses - like the Minolta Rokkor 58mm...? André

Certainly this is a question that can only be answered after we have this body in hand and give it a try. I am hoping the new 5 is built to better tolerances, and that they have designed a mirror box closer in size to the 1 series. Let's hope.

Dear new 5D,

When will you come to your new home?

Your hopefully-soon-to-be owner,
William

Dear William,
I did initially want to go to your home but upon further review I think I'd rather go to John's house; where I'm sure I'll be MUCH happier.

Sincerely, 5DII

11/23 is a Sunday. How is that so? My guess is that it arrives to Adorama on the Friday or Saturday on 11/21 & 11/22.

Who knows, I called last week and they said that they were getting 300 cameras on 10/27 - which is today. Today they said 11/23 - I don't think anyone really knows until they have the cameras on the shelf...
