Can anyone tell the difference btw the 50D and 5DII weather seal door for the CF card. It seems like the one on the 50D is no much better than the 5D with just a piece of thin electrical masking black tape at the leading edge. There is still penty of opportunities for moisture to get in along the sides.
So how would a 5DII weather seal for the CF card door look like? Any pictures?
either i mis-typed or you clipped that out of context
i DID NOT mean to include the 300 f/4 in the junk pile, i might've accidentally implied it by composing my msgs too quickly and carelesly though.
anyway, i did not intend to that, in fact, i had meant the opposite.

yeah seriously guys, this threat is already overloaded, can we have some news on the orders ??!!
news is they are still handing out pre-prods THIS week so we are not likely to get a timely release it seems
basically there is nothing more to say at this point until they release it or some major known entities give it a thorough review, so the off tangents....
they kinda blew the release imo, first all the moon stuff got people so worked up that a 3D was coming and now they can't even get it out until kinda late.
missed the fall foliage, sports, weddings, etc. seasons, releasing it WAY after D700 and right when economy tanks.
maybe it'll be here by christmas, but i seriously dont see this type of cam as a stocking stuffer, so i dont see what that matters.
maybe next year they will be finally back on track after nikon has handed it to them a bit (just like nikon finally got it after stinking it up for a few years)
plus: maybe by the time they finally release it they will have to knock it down $400 to get it to sell in the worried economic situation.

I think the "masking tape" is hydrophobic foam.
I'm guessing that instead of the foam, there is a rubber gasket that sits against the card door, along with an additional groove cut in the plastic (kind of like a buffer) that solidly prevents any water from getting in. If you've seen a 1d card door, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Either that, or they could have kept the same foam and claimed it to be weather sealed.
Of course, someone with experience on the pre-production model could probably tell us- it is the same plastic door though, just the insides may be different?
Good sharpness, very good highlights, poor noise (RAW).
Above iso800, noise performance is rather disappointing.
However, dynamic range was a pleasant surprise!
Camera ____Shadow range Highlight range Usable range
Canon 5D _____-4.7 EV ______3.5 EV ________8.2 EV
Sony -A900____ -5.1 EV ______4.2 EV ________9.4 EV
They also have a blurb in there when comparing the A900 to the 5D and say on page 32, "Ignoring for a moment the obvious depth of field issues and differences in lens performance (the Canon 85mm appears to offer better edge to edge sharpness than the Sony) what really strikes me about these results is just how good the 3 year old EOS 5D is."
In their conclusion they also go on to say, "The biggest challenge to the Alpha 900 is probably the as yet untested Canon EOS 5D Mark II, which promises a similar resolution and a bag full of features (live view, video mode and so on) at a price that's around 10% lower. There's no doubt that existing Sony SLR and legacy Minolta film SLR users now have a fitting flagship model to salivate over and save up for, but in the face of such strong competitors the Alpha 900 may have a tough job persuading anyone to switch systems for it."
It will be really interesting to see the first real hands on tests with a production 5DII.

Those numbers are for JPG's. They have a chart later on showing dynamic range as RAW. It's greater.

Yup, that's why I've been saying in the Sony a900 thread that the camera looks like a good one, but not a great one. They come close to matching last years models, not the new ones out at about the same time, like the 5D mkII. From what we can see, they tried to match the 1Ds mkIII, and go just a bit higher for the pixel count crown, but didn't think about what would replace it, or others.
It's great to have a slightly better viewfinder, and in-body stabilization, which wasn't thought possible for FF, but it's the IQ that, in the end, determines what people go out and buy.
I don't see this taking too many away from either Nikon or Canon.
They charge it when it ships. I ordered 2 mark2's from them a month ago and they have not charged my card. Make sure you make your purchase through www.live.com so you can get the 6% back!
They didn't charge me ... were you using a credit or debit card? Here is a quote straight off of my order status: You are only charged for items when they are shipped.
