i know you cant really compare images as you dont know what lenses and other factors are different but when i look at the images on the web at various sites from 50d and 5d2 side by side the 5d2 just look much sharper and punchier and more real life. ive spent alot of time looking at all the images and the ones taken in lodon (the ice cream van, boats and tower bridge are just amazing.
after spending money on a 70-200 L 2.8 i now realize the differnece money can get you, i will never buy cheaper lenses now. the 5d2 is the limit i can spend and really i think im going to see a good advantage in image quality overr the 50d.
mel, i know its up to me and i cant see why i wouldnt be happy with the 5d2.
i guess im just inpatient and the 50d is here now. but dont want to rush in and get it and then think i should have waited.
a bit like a kid in a toy shop...i want want want. but gut says wait a bit longer...
"just hoping someone in here would talk me out of the 50d and into the 5d2"
If money is tight the 50D is cheaper
If you need video only the 5d2 has it
Apart from this the choice is easy, do you prefer crop or full frame? If you prefer crop (for example you want more reach from your telephoto), get the 50D, if you prefer full frame (for example you need fast wide lenses) wait for the 5d2 (as I am!). Easy.
As you are in the UK too you know how badly we get screwed over here on Canon pricing. Whatever camera you decide to get, I would recommend waiting till next year if you can bear to wait, you will pay a heavy penalty being an early adopter, and with the big recession predicted to hit the UK next year I reckon Canon prices are going to have to drop.
I could be wrong, but I don't think there will be too many people rushing out to buy a 5D2 for £2300 now when they might be able to get one for £1900 just by waiting till next May. The 50D also has a crazy initial price over here, its got to drop! I wonder if Canon executives are reading the same financial newspapers I am!
never had a full frame but always wanted one so its hard for me to compare. thats why i thought you guys could help me as i would think some of you would have experiance of both cameras
yes i like the crop factor for reach but i can put my 1.4 tc on my 70-200 s.8 L and get almost the same reach. and use higher iso's with less noise.
looking at the iso's on posted pics i dont think id go over 800 on the 50d.
am going to new york for thanks giving so i really hope i can get one on pre order from b&H. cost price in uk £ is 1543.58 which is about £700 cheaper than here.
As I have preorder a 5DII our distributor in Greece told us that we expect to have the first cameras at the end of November. What is the rumours in USA or rest of Europe or Japan for that?
How about if Canon announces a camera and then actually ships it? This is quite a bit of BS at this point. If Canon is going to announce months before shipment, Canon should at least say when it's going to ship.
Seems that Chasseur d'Images (issue 308, pg 138) just called the 5D2 'the best and most versatile image maker to date'. And the noise/resolution ratio is the best they've got so far from any DSLR. That is high praise indeed.

They did - end of November. But they gave themselves wiggle room for problems. If they have not had problems it will arrive sooner.
The original 5D was announced for Oct. and came out the last week of September.
J&R ... they told me I am on priority shipping and will be in first batch. But, I ordered soon after it was announced. Plus the body/kit lens combo is not anywhere near as popular as the bodies alone and I heard that Canon may ship body/lens kits first.
am on the phone to them now. they are saying they are getting 200 in on the 30th nov and at the moment they have 193 pre ordered and i can pre order now if i want....maybe a very happy holiday for me..
Just got off the phone with J&R, they have 150 of the body+kit coming on the 30th and only about 30 people on the pre-order list so I pre-ordered it with the kit lens.

I just called them, based on this post. They told me the same thing, but it's November 30th. From your post, I thought it might be October 30th.
