The ONLY true upgrade is the 21MP sensor which Canon themselves claim offers the best image quality available in ANY Canon DSLR, including the 1DsIII. That's a big deal for $2699.
I would not trust the weak weather sealing anymore than what was in the original 5D. It's not up to 1D weather sealing by any means. Movie mode - sigh. Available end of November - might be too long to wait for myself as I just sold my 5D. Every other feature, just as with the original 5D has been held back as to not interfere with 1 series

You forgot the LCD - high res and sunlight viewable. That's a big deal for anyone working outside. Also, colors are more accurate since 2005. The files will be noticeably different from the 5D.
The 5DII will likely be the new alt camera of choice.

Yes, but the Battery's the same form factor, just 1800mAh with a new contact layout and apparently some 'Intelligent' circuitry, so the grip is just a variant of the old design.

Focusing screens are the same basic 3 models updated for the new 98%, .71x finder.

I'm assuming the new battery is chipped to get highly accurate power readings. That should make clones more difficult to make.

Did we need more accurate power readings? I don't.

I don't know about this. With all the gripes about the 5D's lack of "weathersealing", has any of the complainers actually ever gotten their 5D wet? I actually gave mine and the mounted 17-40L a full dunking (totally immersed) in Havasu Creek a few months back. The gasket at the lens mount did its job, as well as the CPL on the lens. Didn't have any water in the CF or battery compartments either. I'll admit, after reading all the complaints about the 5D's so-called inability to prevent the ingress of moisture, I thought for sure that the camera

Yes, this is way overdone. It's also exaggerated by some Nikon users. All DSLR have environmental seals and none are weatherPROOF. Canon added more weatherproofing to the 5DII. 1 series cameras do occasionally fail in the rain.
Keeping a chamois over the lens barrel and whipping down the camera is still the best way to shoot in light rain. People shooting the superbowl in a downpour still put raincoats on "weatherproof" pro cameras.

whaa, 30fps limited to 2mpix and 12minutes. What about the same set of resolutions as stills for as long as the card has space?

It's a file size limitation. All it means is a cut and start new file.

I don't see where Canon says it's 1080p. It may be 1080i. Galbraith says 1080p but I'm not sure if he thinks 1080 lines of horizontal resolution is the same as 1080p

body looks the same so L plates should work on both.

They will work if you do not need access to the remote switch connector. The outlet size and position is somewhat bigger. So, a dedicated L-bracket for the 5D will not work 'flawlessly' with the new camera.

Wow, I am psyched about the changes. I'm out shooting my 5D weekly and absolutely love the camera and its images ... it's my favorite camera of all times. So that this improves (in theory - suppose the actual tests aren't in) IQ ... that alone, on a FF sensor, is worth the upgrade.

shame..as all of my digital shooting where I use the L bracket is tripod and shutter release cable and tethered...nothing like keeping things simple as you update a line of camera...though not a deal breaker obviousely!..I'll just get a bigger bag!!

The built in mic with voice recording and external mic input could be very useful, even when not shooting video clips. My old Fuji S2 had this feature. I guess one use when using alternative lenses might be to record the actual F stop and lens used for each shot if you needed that info, along with any other relevant shot information.

As far as I'm concerned, only the 1Ds series are the alt cameras of choice. My copy of the 5D didn't work with half of my Contax lenses. I had to buy a used 1Ds2 and it works flawlessly with all my lenses. The files are so much better anyway that my next upgrade will be nothing less than the 1Ds4.

Needless to mention focusing screens inaccuracies, mirrors falling off... etc.

Yea Cogi the HD movie feature was over the top of my head, holding a SLR to make movies instead of taking photos makes me look kinda silly next to a guy holding a compact dedicated HDD JVC camcorder . But I'm sure onlookers would get used to it soon, wedding shooters probably don't need their video counterparts anymore !?!

Also, you guys notice the holes below the "5D" badge and beside the eyepiece on the new model? Any chance they are built-in mic hole? If so they are likely to be the weathersealing's weakest point.

I hope the jump to 21MP doesn't tax too much on lens performance like the 1Ds3 does. It's kinda lame when you buy a supposedly better body to get softer pictures. If so, this upgrade is gonna be costly since the fairly good performing lenses are going to become subpar (faults revealed) when mated with the now punishing and demanding hi-res sensor, then only the best lenses can sing.

Oh No! Read what this Canon employee is saying about the 5DII being held back by the Marketing department:

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/techdigest/20080917/ttc-exclusive-canon-engineers-held-back-e870a33.html

"I am hugely disappointed because once again Canon engineers are dictated by their marketing department and had to keep up with the megapixel race. They have the technology to blow the competition away by adapting the new 50D sensor tech in a full frame format and just easing off a little on the megapixels. Although no formal testing has been done on the new model yet, judging by the spec and technology used, it just seems to be as good or as bad as the competition - not beating them by a mile (which we used to)."

I don't think the gapless sensor technology will ever be applied except in the 1D series, untill the competition does it. Canon's policy has always been to protect their 1D flagship cameras, unlike Nikon with the D700. I'm sure those who were expecting a Gripless 1Ds3 for 2600$ are now very disappointed.

When has it been any other way ( I said the same in relation to Leica's M8 upgrade) - believing otherwise is just naivety about how business works. Maybe it's not the best camera that Canon's engineers could produce if they ran the company but it's obviously not a bad camera at all and a worthwhile upgrade for many.

So, one is actually getting a more advanced, though not FF, sensor with the 50D! Interesting!

Indeed! And well within Canon's pattern. Try new technology on amateur models, then incorporate it in the 1D series. The last model that benefits from this technology is the 5D or the other inferior FF model. I'm sure it will be applied in the 5D mark 3

Yes, but for some crazy reason, I thought the 5D would be that test bed for Canon. Sort of what the T-90 was for the whole Eos 1 and beyond.
