After reading the intro I wasn't expecting the quality shots you posted. Pleasantly suprised. D700 is a treat for sure. Can't wait to see more this season. Good stuff DJ.
And ditto Jay... keep the OHL shots coming mister. Thanks for the comments.

How was the overall light in the rink you were at?
"Adapt and Overcome!" Don't remember who said it but that is what you did!!!!
This rink is actually not one of the worse ones I shoot in. I can usually get ISO1600 to work at this age level with an F2.8 lens. As far as lighting consistency goes, it sure isn't a pro level arena, but usually a custom WB isn't TOO far off from one shot to the next.
Appreciate you taking the time to check out the set... cheers!

Very cool shots. I rarely get a chance to shoot hockey these days but when I do it s usually my brother playing in the evening. These images bring back many memories of going to hockey games as a kid, mostly it was trying to keep warm at some of the venues we visited. Keep up the good work. #10 and #4 are my favorites.

Hey Mike thanks. The facial expressions you sometimes get at this age level are great, and the kids genuinely enjoy playing the game which makes it fun. Maybe you don't get the huge stick flex or big hits at this age, but the fun's definitely there. Here's another example of the faces I dig:
DJ - These are great shots. I actually prefer #5 (even over #1). The facial expression tells a story for me. I can almost imagine what's happening on the ice. The timing of the bonus shot is just too good for words.
I'm going to expose my status as a lowly amateur here ... two questions come to mind:
1) you got some 'splainin' to do ... how do you get such white ice? I've tried all sorts of camera settings and PP procedures and none of them are as effective as I'd like to see (either too much work or weak results).
2) how do you post pictures when Image Upload is off? I've always wondered this but was too embarrassed to ask (and probably should have been this time too...)
Thanks for the post DJ. It's guys like you that keep the bar high for guys like me. When I think I've done well, I look at shots like these and realize that much to learn there is ...
Bah, I appreciate the kind words Gary but the bar gets set higher around this place by guys with a lot more skill and experience than me.
As for the ice, I bet 90% of the battle is in exposure... getting that histogram to the right edge. Not doing this will make for yellower ice. I also always shoot hockey RAW, and although it makes for slower and more involved PP, it gives me the chance to tweak it in post. I do a custom WB right off the ice too - about 1/2 way through my intended shooting zone and completely OOF. It still won't be perfect (damn those cycling lights) on every shot but at least it will be a good starting point. In post I usually use a WB tool to sample the ice or boards or a true grey part of a uniform if the WB doesn't seem right in-cam. That's about it.
For photos, I have my own site, but I use photobucket for forum posting. It isn't perfect but it's easy as heck. Only trouble is that sometimes if I have 3 or 4 active threads with photos I sometimes come close to their allotted bandwidth. In the reply or post box here if you simply paste down the image location it pops up automatically on the page... thank you Fred Miranda!
Thanks again for the comments. Post up your shots often - there's a wealth of talented photogs around here that'll help give you feedback. Cheers!
Great shots, I shoot a lot of youth hockey. It takes more focus to get the shot with that lens. Unfortunately I have to shoot thru the glass sometimes which makes it really difficult to get great shots, I used my 85 1.8 for close shots

Yeah it definitely made me work a little to get some shots, but at the same time it wasn't all bad because I definitely got to get decent reach into the ends for different action.
Hey DJ, great shots! #1 is my favourite as well. Nice of the player to come towards you like that! Hockey is just starting in my end of the world, so I'll be posting some of mine pretty soon. Even though I love my D200, I'm itching to get a D700 to see how I do in our caverns, but it's probably not going to happen until next spring. I think I might just rent one to try it before I buy... I have a tough time getting 1/250 @ 1600 ISO wide open in the main rink over here. I'm thinking of getting my son to shine a flashlight on the players I'm shooting to improve the lighting a bit
How many stops do you figure you're getting over your D300? I figure the D300 is 1 stop better than the D200, does that sound about right?
Hey Rich, thanks for dropping in, although believe me don't rent the D700 unless you can put your rental fee down on the camera if you keep it. I'll send you a PM.
