O no .... after the rumour threads we will get the "should I sell my 35L and switch to the 35L II" posts
I agree they will probably upgrade to weather sealing and new coatings. Small update like the 85L. It won't cost Canon more in production terms and they can emphasize at Photokina again that Canon is the brand who supports available light photographers with lightstrong lenses (24L, 35L, 50L, 85L) so they can be creative in a way that wouldn't possible elseway ...

what about updating non L primes start with 20mm,28mm,35mm and make an 18 f2.8
There's nothing to say that wouldn't happen, but I think as non L lenses those would target relatively niche markets, even more so than fast, wide L primes. You can buy the decent 17-40 for $700 that covers all those focal lengths and if you really need f/2.8, then there is the very good 16-35 II (or the EF-S 17-55 for xxD users). The demand for an 18mm lens seem to me more based on the desires of niche market photo purists, many of whom probably already make use of alt lens solutions.
I'm also a bit baffled at a 35L MkII lens, but yes, the current lens is a pre-digital design. It would seem to me that the 24L would benefit more from a redesign than the 35L. Heck, just update both of them... but I'd rather see improved 24 & 45 TS-Es with much better CA control.
Hi, you noticed it fast! No it's not mine, but my wife got it with her for two days when her car was in the garage for service. She now discovered EOSfun too even though this is a different kind.
Definitely a price upgrade. There's no real need to upgrade the lens itself. But Canon will probably make some minor cosmetic changes for a "Mark II" version just so they'll have an excuse to jack up the price.

I should have added... and with an EOS camera, of course. All the more fun.

Agreed. Look at the recent 85L II or the 16-35 II... or even the 200 f/2. Maybe give it 6 months for the price to settle somewhat.
Maybe, just maybe, Canon is improving the resolving power for the sensors to follow. What is perfect on 8, 10, and even 21 Mpx might not be so perfect on 50...or they could be "updating" it in order to raise the price. Regardless, I will take your old 35 mk Is off your hands, because you know it won't be worth much when the new one comes out...
As other posters above, I do expect the new price to be significantly higher than the current price. By the way, the price shown for the current 35L/1.4 on the website seems very good to me (are they trying to get rid of their stock ?).
Seems like good news to me -- weather sealing would be nice. I was speculating this would occur, as it's out of stock in so many places after having been in stock for so long.

14L, 16-35L, 50L, 85L... all have been updated.
Makes sense to see an updated 35L.
Personally I don't really see how is makes any sense to update the 35L. Especially with so many other lenses that could be updated.
It made sense to update the 14L and the 16-35L because IQ was notoriously flakey, and for lenses that expensive it shouldn't be.
Technically the 50L isn't a MKII, the original model was discontinued and it was replaced years later with a considerably different model.
The 85L was updated with lens coatings, faster AF and ETTL II compatibility. The 35L already has quick AF and ETTL II compatibility, and it's probably one of the least complained about lenses around here, especially IQ wise. Also the original 85L was released almost 10 years earlier than the 35L, so it was considerably older.

Every 10th thread on here says something about "my 35L doesn't work on my 1-Series camera...it works fine on my 5d, etc etc..." so that reason, maybe some new circuitry, a little weather proofing, minor tweaks are what it will offer, just enough so that the 35L works like it should now and in the future. I don't think the optics will be change much at all, just the build really.
