Makes sense to see an updated 35L.
and follow it up with the 135L...then the 24L...
They did a good job updating them all except the 50 has its problems. And the new 200mm seems to be an engineering success from what I've read and can be considered an improvement.
If the lens was designed before the DSLR era then it will be on the list for upgrade, no matter how good the current version is.
you almost offended me, how can you better a lens that is already perfect.
The 35L is about as good as it gets in this focal range.
The only thing that would make me even look at a new version of this lens would be either f 1.2 or IS, and I think that Canon would be hard pushed to keep the image quality the same if they added IS and extra lens elements needed to accomplish this.

Well, they could make the lens barrel into metal instead of plastic. And they can seal it against dust and moisture. The original 35L isn't sealed. And while they're at it, they can update the coatings on the lens elements to optimize it for use with digital SLRs. Like they did with the 85L to 85L II.
But I think it's safe to say that there will indeed be a EF 35mm f/1.4L USM II. If I remember correctly, that is the exact same website that prematurely listed the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens waaaay back in April 2008. They were correct then, and they're (probably) correct now. I would expect the 35L mk2 in Spring 2009.
I don't think you will see IS. Its darned sharp; I am not sure that could be improved much, but who knows? Less lateral chromatic aberration would be nice, but that's tough in such a fast design.
