Just in case you haven't seen this yet: the Ray Flash ringflash-adapter for the 580EX II and SB-800. Of course much much bulkier, but solves the shadow problem completely (I guess).
The bounce head is definitely nice, but it's not as powerful as the Nikon SB400 though. Still, it's smaller than the older PZ40. Who knows Canon may bring one out, since Nikon and Sunpak both offer this small tiltable flash. Red eye is very easy to fix in Lightroom or Photoshop.

The RD2000 has a tiltable head as well. Since it's smaller, it's probably a better choice. The only disadvantage is that it might be too close to the axis of some lenses to prevent redeye.
I like that in a pocketable flash. I'm a bouncer (no, not the kind that keeps things in order at the local saloon - I'm too old for that), and it would be nice to have a little flash like that!
Yes, you unfortunately are, Tommy.
That cheerleading jingle is being used in the manner of the water drip torture which really amounts to obnoxious forum manners.
I tried this and found two problems: first, it's cumbersome and puts a lot of strain on your hotshoe and flashfoot. Secondly, the light does not spill very far around the ring, so it's pretty bright at the top, but quite a few stops darker at the bottom. It doesn't produce the light quality of a ringflash.

What is it with this EOSfun nonsense?

It'd be a lot less annoying if of 'other' people weren't contributing to the perpetuation of it. One individual is one thing, a dozen makes it feel more like kindergarten.
My calculations show that only 15.5343 more posts are required before this thread reaches critical mass and collapses to a black hole. The good thing is that is the only way to actually destroy information, which would otherwise just pollute the spectrum for eternity.

I personally think it is a little silly, but completely harmless and so I don't worry about it - there are many more important things in life to get uptight about. As mentioned, those 2 show nothing but courtesy and good natured ribbing - which seems to rub you the wrong way. You might be better off patrolling dpreview or some other place where you're observations would be more "appreciated".
I agree it's more than a little silly and you're right not to worry about it.
What's even more silly is that you're worried about my harmless reply...
It seems that you are the one pa-"trolling" here no?

Or are you just having EOSfun?
Obviously you aren't capable of recognizing when you cross a line...
Here at FM we are a lot more respectful than to accuse one another of being mentally diseased, and I can assure you Fred won't tolerate your nonsense if it continues

Lots of things are easy to fix in post. That doesn't mean one shouldn't try to get them right at exposure time anyway.
Both of the Sunpak flashes mentioned are small. And if I were to buy a flash specifically for use with my G9, it'd almost certainly be the RD2000, since I already have bigger flash units available that would put the flash head well away from the lens axis when required. But if somebody is considering the RD2000 as their sole flash unit, its proximity to the lens axis is something to consider.
