You could recommend "I think sony and canon is coming with some fullframe alternatives the next weeks, let us hold our horses until we have all the players at the table".

She trashed her 5D. Some people might not want to wait for some 6-8 weeks, stopping shooting meanwhile ...
D700 is a great camera. If she likes the new cameras more, she can put the D700 as a worthy backup cam for the case of another wreckage.

Always some git ranting about how Canon have not done much, despite them staying ahead of the competition for 20 years.

Much more anoying than someone putting out an invite to have some eosfun.

+ 22 ( do not know what that means, but it looked good to me)

To your last post: Can it be I already saw this? Ah, yes, there was Davids comment 5 posts earlier ...

I have often thought of getting a d700 or even the coming a900 (sony), but selling my 24 1.4, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 70-200... is just a bit of an hassle :P then getting new lenses.. phew! expensive. I could try to survive on alt mf-lenses for all but the 70-200, but I don't know, still a lot of money :P

She gave her now useless 24-105 4.0 L IS USM to brainiac as a "thank you" for his exellent recommendation.

I said 'current'. The best 'current' alternative to the 5D is not a 5D2, since it is not available, or even announced.

My sister loved her 5D because of full frame and the viewfinder, but the absense of a pop-up flash has been a real pain for her. All her friends are taking pictures when she can't. She is not happy to buy and lug around an expensive and bulky pro dedicated flash unit. Her only option for full frame and built-in flash that runs off the camera battery is...

The 5D isn't a pro camera, it's an affordable full frame camera.

rather use CF cards myself...a 1 series style grip would be nice..

I'd prefer a 1d type grip, but this is obviously not the case for most people, so I would be surprised if Canon does this. However, if it is a detached style grip that is available, I wish they would make it look a bit more streamlined and ergonomic, like the Nikon D700/D300 grips. The Canon grips are just so clunky looking and doesn't match up with the body.

I look forward to the 5DII, or whatever it will be called. I currently have a 20D, which works great, but I have been wanting better AF for a while now. If the 5DII is closer to 1 series focusing than any previous camera, I'll go that route, otherwise I'll probably wind up getting a used 1DIIn. Weather sealing would be nice, but there are ways to do this aftermarket. Whatver Canon comes out with I sincerely hope the prices go down, if for no other reason that as technologies develop they become less expensive to produce, thanks to economies of scale.

this is something I would like have. Better than being stuck at custom iso everytime. Im starting to wonder if they have different lights in Japan than here

Butt detection? that's funny! I'll join the stampede to the local camerashop for that

Not in an ergonomic, aesthetically pleasing, or convenient matter though, so I place this quite high. It's really just for peace of mind, especially when you are dealing with such expensive equipment. I can understand not weather sealing a semi pro body, but for something costing 3K+.... I would hope my manufacturer places more investment into the intrinsic protection of the product.

I expect some sort of sealing.

Had the camera come out last year i would say it would be pretty basic. However the 50d is a teaser. The 5D is about to be Canons staement about how they want to be perceived in the marketplace.

From that perspective i expect them to delight the fans with Megapixels, high iso/lownoise, weather sealing and better autofocus.

Those four things will seal the deal for me. I could live with a popup flash but i really hope they don't add one.

Actually she uses (used) a Contax N24-85, an Oly 40 f2, and a Contax 100 f2.8 Makro-Planar. But they can be sold if the D700 suits her needs better, which right now, it does.

I think Canon will continue to miss out on high end amateur sales if they leave out the flash. The pros who say they don't want the pop-up flash will buy the camera regardless, on account of its cost/megapixels/quality/size and so on. Full-frame amateurs say "what no flash??". They just don't get it. Then they buy a D700.

That is what I think we will get. Compared to 5D anyway. But compared to other aktual cameras, too. And that at an affordable low price (compared to other companies offers).

That would be great. And my own christmas present. I already started to hold down my expenses.

I would not want a built in grip or memory. It would be very stupid of canon to release a camera with this useless crap

OK, take a look at these assumptions:
(1) "Consumer" body 5DII..............$2,999.99.
(2) "Weather sealed" (pro) body 5DII......$3,999.99.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The difference is $1,000 which should be looked upon as your cost of insurance against the risk of your camera (1) getting drenched and (2) malfunctioning as a result. Steep, eh ?

Just that would be enough for me.
I live in rainy England currently. Sealing is important.

19 point AF would be nice as well though. Not fussed about higher MP (12 is fine), and I rarely shoot above ISO 1250, which is perfectably acceptable for my kind of shooting.
