I do not think so. The 5D successor can not fail against Nikons D700/D3. The new sony will be relaesed under Nikons D700s price and it will have doubble resolution. Nikon uses their sensor. So they will have to offertheir D4 much below their D3 price. I see not how that should work.

Double MP is not double the resolution. You must quadruple the MP to double the resolution, all other things equal.

No. They are not dump. The 50D is just an intro to where it will lead. That cameras IQ overcome all competitors gear. D300 is blown of, D700/D3 is old fashioned again (concerning IQ) 5D2 at that sensor technologie will be NO 1 in IQ compared to all available cameras. And affordable. And 1D will follow.
Wow, sounds like you know everything Ralph Based on your comments and the fact that my camera lacks a direct print button must mean I'm screwed because the gear I'm working with is "old fashioned"
Two features that would push the 5DII way ahead of the D700:
(1) Built-in memory (16GB or more)
(2) Built-in grip
If these two features were offered, along with what people are already speculating about the 5DII, it will be an absolute no-brainer. Something gells me we won't see either of these two features. Is anybody else interested in seeing these?

Canon has the 1D3 to match up against the D700. The 5D successor, by definition, will not have the highest end AF. But it will be better than the D3/D700 in file quality. How the photo looks is still important to a few people.
Canon could have a 3D camera for us. But that's not a 5D successor.
For you doom and gloomers, have you worked with files from the current 1 series? Do you know how small of an area Nikon's AF focus points are grouped together? Nikon certainly still doesn't match up against Canon in important areas.
There is good reason that some people are better suited to how Nikon has its products positioned. This was going to happen sooner or later. Thank goodness it did. For Canon to still charge $7500 for a camera body it's going to have to be one heck of a camera.
Please don't start new threads for this kind of stuff. Please look around and notice the pinned thread at the top of the forum, which where to post this wishlist.
I think it's valid because it brings up two features that are rarely talked about, and not just restricted to the release of the 50D. I'm asking if people would be interested in seeing more built-in grips, or seeing the possibility of internal memory.
I wouldn't want either of these features. I much prefer being able to remove the memory and have it downloading while I keep shooting with a fresh memory card in the camera. I wouldn't want the camera to be tied up by a full internal memory, so that I couldn't shoot more photos without first clearing up space. As for built in grips, I have two bodies with (1DII) and two without (5D, 20D). I have the grips for the "withouts", but rarely use them. The smaller body size is great for travel and backup.

Exactly. OP, the D700 is largely a D3 that was implemented without the built-in grip, and is preferred by many for that feature-- smaller size. So a built-in grip wouldn't push the 5DII ahead of the D700, as it is not really a lack in the latter camera. Instead, the 5DII would just implement a different form factor.
You know what I'd love to see, but probably won't? 1.6x crop sRaw mode at 8-10 MP with the crop lines marked in the viewfinder. Two cameras in one. Though I guess I could just buy a focus screen with said crop lines and crop myself... Or just frame loose...
The rumoured camera sounds fantastic to me... AF is irrelevant as I only use one AF lens. As long as it's accurate, I'm happy. Speed and a million points are not important. I'd like the mirror swing to have a smaller arc, but I doubt too much thought has gone into this. I'd also like a good viewfinder, though the 5D's is adequate with a good screen. Price is the next issue. I sold my 5D last week for I guess around $1550 US, which is not significantly less than you can get them new online from HK. If this camera at ~21MP sells for about what I originally paid for my 5D 12 months ago - $US 2500 or so, I guess - I'll be buying it.
I also hope that it takes my EE-S screen, as I've had it custom brightened, and it's a fairly expensive process. I suspect it will.
I do not want a built-in grip. I have small hands and the lighter weight is a big benefit. The built in memory is an interesting thought though. I'd like to see that with the option of removable memory. However, I'm not sure that's a great idea. Like all hardware, it's a question of when it will fail - not if. I can only imagine how expensive it would be to repair/replace internal memory...
