Canon's "evolution" ad says it all to me. No 3D that matchs or passes nikon.
The stated rumor upgrades for the 5D2 will fall flat. Minor upgrades with more mega pixels.
The D700 is looking better and better !

Sure I'm being pessimistic, but if these newer rumors are true, this looks just like business as usual. Strictly amateur camera with a sensor. I hope it has a price of $1599, because I'm going to have an extremely hard time paying one penny more.....

What newer rumors? I am glad to be able to expect "facts" soon.
For me 50D was great news. And 5D2 will even be better.
I do not think "amareur camera with a sensor". I expect a new tool with best IQ ever. At an affordable price (I hope it is). That fixes all my wishes and (I expect now) some more.
5D was a semipro "only", too. And its still well used by pros to make their money.
Whats wrong with that. I can and do not want to spend € 4200-7000 to get a so called "Pro" camera.

Not dumb at all. I use one now, and have for years now, right along side 1 series cameras, to make my living. I guess it's only dumb for you since your needs are closer to what a rebel or xxd offer, so in that case you'll be fine....buy a few...
I want a professional level camera, with no excuses, in a small size body. Is that hard to understand?

But seriously, that seems to be what some expect, and that ain't going to happen. I would expect something in between the XXD series and the 1-series in terms of features. It will be about the same size as the present 5D.

James I totally agree with you on this one. If Canon fails to deliver what Nikon has proven to be possible,
and VERY marketable I might add. The D700 might be the cam for us few who are lhoping for a mini 1D.
Anyone that knows my posting history will know I'm an old cynic, I think the D700 came out of the blue and Canon doesn't have time to respond, however the tag line "the future of photography" at the main Canon Europe site - http://www.canon-europe.com/ will hopefully prove me wrong, fingers crossed that "the future of photography" isn't "slightly upgrading everything"

I think you just write things in an attempt to stir up $#1+.
The existence of a pop-up flash does not detract from a camera; it adds to its utility. Pop-up flash can be quite effectively used for fill duty. I shot a daytime outdoor wedding a couple years ago (informal - last minute favor for a friend) with my 20D. I only had one flash unit with me, as I wasn't planning to shoot the wedding. When that flash went belly up in the middle of the shoot, I just removed it from the camera and popped up the built-in flash. Worked perfectly well for fill -- results no different from the shots taken with the external flash.
I currently have three dedicated flash units at my disposal, wireless/remote fire capability, diffusers, reflectors, etc. But I would applaud Canon if they include a pop-up flash on the 5D replacement.
