Dude, we all hope the Mrs doesn't read along..
Nikon's done great with the D3 and D700; it's good for competition and hopefully it will give Canon a good motivation to improve their products further. I agree with what's said about IQ, so I'll focus on that. Just hope I can get it in my hands on Photokina
My wife never noticed the difference between my EOS 7 and EOS 3 ... or between my 20D and 5D .... BUT she has noticed that the 5D grew ... good thing she doesn't know to look at the number on front ... what was a 5 is now a 1 ... Thank goodness for Ebay and Paypal ...

Guys, are we not jumping the gun here? We don't know what the Nikon camp is doing and what they will be releasing at Photokina next month. We do know that they have already developed a 24mp sensor. How do we know that they will not have a new processing engine that is better than Digic IV? How do we know that the next iteration of the D700 will not have a 20+ megapixel sensor with higher ISO and even lower noise? They could be working on the D700 replacement for some time now, with an IQ that is better than the 5D II. Do not under-estimate the competition. I have heard from the Nikon people that they have VERY big plans and will be unleashing several new products in the very near future....Show more →
I think so. But I do not expect that there will be an D700 iteration soon. It was introduced 2 month ago and is on sale now since one month only.
When the 5D was introduced, Brian Worley, product manager of DSLR cameras at Canon Europa, stated that Canon's future intention was that every camera in its line "except the cheapest" would have a 24x36 sensor.

If Canon comes out with a new 5D Mk II (or whatever it will be called) at 21 megapixels with a Digic 4 sensor at Photokina 2008 it will be a big blow to Nikon. And if it is around $2500, I will be buying one - no matter what my wife says. Hmmm... I really hope she doesn't read this forum.
Amen to the wives not reading this forum, and thank goodness my wife is pretty darned clueless about cameras. I think she still hasn't figured out I replaced my old Tamron 24-135mm with a Canon 17-55.
And I agree completely about a quick purchase, maybe in time for Christmas, if they do price it in that range. Thank goodness I can run it through my business as an expense, too!
Do we really need more then 24MP? Seriously? At some point MP will not matter anymore. I think you are dreaming about the 1Ds4.

I think the 5D will be the Nikon killer.
Currently there are those switching boats due to Nikons fine lineup.
But it will be the 5D offering more megapixels at a better price that will see some swing back and others who were contemplating a switch will be too afraid to ever consider it again.
When Nikon release a 24 megapixel full frame it will be quickly followed by a 1Ds mk 4 release at a similar price. So thanks to Nikon the super high price of the 1Ds will be driven down to an acceptable level.
Nikon will have greater market share for what they have done but will not have what they could have due to Canons quick reaction.
5D will be the first bite on Nikons legs. the 1Ds 4 at $5200 will be the second. ...Show more →

Do we really need cars driving 150mph? Seriously? At some point speed will not matter anymore. I think I am dreaming about a Ferrari anyway.
Concerning me 16-18MP would be enough. For now and the next couple of years.
But if 24 MP or more are offered my "small" 5D2 would be available cheaper :-) than if not.

I am not a Nikon fan but I can tell you that Nikon has a lot of tricks up their sleeves. Look at the rapid-fire release of the D300, D3, D700 and D90. For sure, we will see one more body next month, and another in February. Nikon is back with a vengeance, and they will continue to be very aggressive in the coming months. Which is all good, as this forces Canon to be on their toes and be very competitive, and this one-upmanship battle will continue for some time.
