Currently there are those switching boats due to Nikons fine lineup.
But it will be the 5D offering more megapixels at a better price that will see some swing back and others who were contemplating a switch will be too afraid to ever consider it again.
When Nikon release a 24 megapixel full frame it will be quickly followed by a 1Ds mk 4 release at a similar price. So thanks to Nikon the super high price of the 1Ds will be driven down to an acceptable level.
Nikon will have greater market share for what they have done but will not have what they could have due to Canons quick reaction.
5D will be the first bite on Nikons legs. the 1Ds 4 at $5200 will be the second.

Yes and no. YES: First bite was 50D. It outperforms Nicons try to get back into market,
Makes look D300 like a toy and even replaces D3/D700 to what it is. Just not up to date.
Nikonians might hate me. But that is reality back again. It was since years like Nikon has been No 2 since digital SLRs occured. There is no bite in the leg. Its just a rotten bone.
No! :
5D II will be the sword in the heart. There is no way Nikon has an answer without deplacing its current just introduced high end range. Nikonians may cry about "features". Photographie imo is about doing images. Image quality is what counts (to me). First. Nice gear is second. So they are where they always have been. Second place. I really found it unbelieveable they came out with a 3D to announce a competitor against a 3 year old semipro camera in just adding higher ISO range only. I really understood why they fought their own product with D700. They tried to get into the race again. But offering a "new" product that is not worth the extra € 700 by having no advantage except higher Iso in IQ against an "grandfather" was outperforming themselves. 5D II will be introduced within the next ten days. It will blew them of the shelves.
Thats my opinion. Lets discuss it in 10 days, please.
Let me add that if the new 5D has 21 megapixels on a digic 4 sensor we will likely be seeing the best full frame images produced in the world. Nothing will come close.
Oh man, don't underestimate Nikon. They are like Rasputin Thou should not wish to kill them, because they are part of the EOSfun; features or image quality that's the question. Canon and Nikon is like ying and yang you know.
Besides within a few weeks, there will be happy Nikonians that will tell you what the next premium DSLR from Canon lacks ...
It would not be to our advantage to see Nikon fall behind Canon too much (if it happens at all). Only hard competition will keep both manufacturers racing to market with new and improved offerings.
I believe that Nikon's improves camera lineup did pressure Canon to do more and offer it for less. And at this stage, it is hard to say that 50D will be more of a success than D90. It may herald new sensor technology, but, at its price point, and with video, D90 looks very good too on paper.
Let's way for the pics, and hope all of them are very good.

Until the 1Ds mark 4 of course.
If Canon comes out with a new 5D Mk II (or whatever it will be called) at 21 megapixels with a Digic 4 sensor at Photokina 2008 it will be a big blow to Nikon. And if it is around $2500, I will be buying one - no matter what my wife says. Hmmm... I really hope she doesn't read this forum.
Nikon's done great with the D3 and D700; it's good for competition and hopefully it will give Canon a good motivation to improve their products further. I agree with what's said about IQ, so I'll focus on that. Just hope I can get it in my hands on Photokina
Guys, are we not jumping the gun here? We don't know what the Nikon camp is doing and what they will be releasing at Photokina next month. We do know that they have already developed a 24mp sensor. How do we know that they will not have a new processing engine that is better than Digic IV? How do we know that the next iteration of the D700 will not have a 20+ megapixel sensor with higher ISO and even lower noise? They could be working on the D700 replacement for some time now, with an IQ that is better than the 5D II. Do not under-estimate the competition. I have heard from the Nikon people that they have VERY big plans and will be unleashing several new products in the very near future.
Wow, now DPReview has it's own official rumors page... ("prediction/hopes" as they call it)
Quote from this DPreview's preview show report page:
"Full frame sensors - Full frame sensors - This part of the picture is pretty much complete, however at this Photokina there will be more digital SLRs with full frame (36 x 24 mm) sensors than any previous show, and they will cost much less than they have at any time in the past. It's not inconceivable to think that the future of semi-professional and professional photography will be viewed through a big viewfinder."
What do you guys make from this Introduction price at 2500$ Would this mean Sony is gonna introduce their full frame at bottom price? Will the 5D stay at a more competitive price, just like the 40D next to the 50D as in Canon's official announcement. Give your thoughts, your interpretations, we want more rumors
Didn't you know Fred has special subscriptions for our wifes? They can register as spouse, then Fred provides them credentials for the Guardian account. I am sure Mrs Doorn already knows about your sneaky plans and she will do anything to keep you from getting the holy grail in your hands
Hey, don't worry our wifes want EOSfun too. Mine got that EOS Volkswagen just a few days back.
