Ralph, we do understand Norwegisher humo(u)r as we have read many Henrik Ibsen's literary masterpieces such as The Norwegian Blue Parrot pines for Norwegian Wood.

Won't the "jaggies" go away when the gap between the microlenses touch as in the 50D? Wouldn't this decrease or eleminate the need for an AA filter?
No, jaggies are a function of sampling frequencies and source scene spatial frequencies. Even perfect sampling that captures every photon would have jaggies if you don't have a proper AA filter or use a blurry lens.

maybe I used the wrong terme? When I started in 3D Visualisation in 1980 with cubicomps "Picturemaker" I first used anti aliazing to avoid those horribel jaggies in diagonal lines and fields image calculation causes in creating images pixel by pixel. The way to avoid this was called always and sill is called "anti aliasing".
True, but I hadn't considered that since that is CGI (Computer Generated Graphics), not digital image processing.
You can't capture an image with "jaggies" and then apply some after the fact magic to remove them without creating bogus image data. You could apply some advanced AI image recognition system to find lines, but it would guess wrong at times and draw lines where they shouldn't be.
The only solution is an anti-aliasing filter that cuts sharply and cleanly at the Nyquist frequency (of the 2D spatial frequencies). This is impossible to perfect, so (like everything else in photography) you have to compromise. Eliminating the AA filter, as Leica does, is not a compromise, it is a mistake. The Canon 5D AA filter seems to be just about right (from my experience).

I understood. But the jaggies would happen with the or no gap between two. There are and where (micro) lenses projekting the light to any dot on the sensor. Its still the same result with no gap inbetween. No gap means just more caught light.
Ah, yes. It's clearer now. Bigger microlenses only act as a bigger funnel, but the bucket doesn't have any idea where the rain came from.

don't forget about the ability to record HD video. it will need it to stay viable for news photographers. i just wonder where the audio inputs will fit (grip?).

What does this have to do with Norwegian/German/Canadian English, or parrots and pines, or anti-aliasing, or...
oh wait, you returned to topic so suddenly that it seemed off topic.
A low pass or high pass or bandpass filter can be done in electronic hardware or in software. Any good electrical engineering book on filters can discribe this. This is generally taught in the third year electrical engineering courses on filter theory.
All of that is pretty interesting, but the bigger picture is that those "specs" are made up nonsense from everybody's wishlist. You guys are setting yourselves up for disappointment, and thn you'll be mad about what the 5dm2 CAN do.
It won't have weathersealing, it won't have more than 4fps, it won't be cheap, and it won't have pro AF. Canon is going to prop up the 1dsm3 as long as possible, so you might as well get used to it and stop ratcheting up your expectations.
It will have great image quality at high ISO for about $3000.
actually meant external audio or XLR-inputs. one of the new NIkons already does short video grabs. Canon can one-up them by making their video ability on a new camera usable for broadcast (but most likely just web, since thats all newspapers do). there's a few ofther brands with those capabilities already, and the prices keep on dropping. hopefully it will not even affect price. one can hope.

If it weren't for Nikon and Sony I'd completely agree, but Canon at least has to trump the D700 in order not to lose face. That's what makes it kind of hard to predict...

He had me until he wrapped up his statement with even more speculation. Goodness gracious.

Well, Canon WILL lose customers if they choose that strategy, I have patiently waited for a small form factor, pro body quality canon fullframe. I have so far waited with no luck, if they keep that "winning streak", I think I have to change sides, and I suspect many others will too. And that is sad :/ I love my alternative lenses on canon, my 24 1.4... but still..

We might get this ... but why do so many insist that it has to be a "5D MkII"? Wouldn't it make sense for Caon to replace the 5D, an entry level FF (FF in a 20D body) with another entry FF? Like a FF 50D? At an afordable price? Then, bring out a pro grade small body, like the the D700, for that smaller market? They'd be catching everyone with their pants down: no one has an entry level FF. AND a 21 mp "3D", with better IQ and high ISO performance compared to the D700 would be a winner there as well, especially if it used some variation of the AF in a 1 series cam.
