The big question with the rumoured 24L is this, is it a warm over or an full on redesign? The 14IIL was a completely new optical design and they (correct me if I'm wrong) added weather sealing. I'm kind hoping that this new 24L will have updated optics, coating and get weather sealing. I think it's bizarre that the f2.8 L zooms get weather sealing but these more costly primes don't. The 50mm f1.2 L (which is a new design and it's debatable if it's a replacement fot the 50mm f1.0 L). The 85 II L was mostly an AF warm over but with new optical coatings. ...Show more →
It they stick with the 77mm front element the 24LII probably won't be that great.

Ralph, your last announcement prediction was completely wrong, what on earth makes you think we'll get all worked up with anticipation based on this one?!

The term "limited" is unfortunate, but the aperture number is still useful to know. In landscape were usually looking for a lot of DOF and max details for enlargement. It certainly shows why lens movements may be important.
Absolutely. IMO it is perfectly valid to describe the diffraction "limitation" of digital sensors and film emulsions alike. It is true that diffraction is a function of lens aperture - for a given aperture the size of the Airy disk will be constant regardless of the sensor. However the whole point of the "diffraction limited" argument for sensors is that there is no benefit in having pixel dimensions smaller than the airy disks. At small apertures you will not lose any data quality, but you will not gain anything either. In simple terms, an f8 exposure of a 25MP sensor has no more detail than f8 on a 12MP sensor.
To get the resolution benefit from a 1DsIII or 5DII you should be shooting at f5.6 (or bigger), which is not optimal for landscape work.

(Have you seen Monty Python's Life of Brian? )
First one came from my dealer, second is based on this rumor thread.
And yes, I played the main caracter ...

There's a new moon, 29 Sept. The full moon before the Autumnal Equinox normally has a red haze to it. I don't see that red haze in the Canon advert.
This is interesting, as there WAS a red background in the full moon teaser ad for a short time Sunday AM (PDT), but then it went away. Odd.
If anything it seems that Canon has managed to keep a real tight lip on this one. No leaked print materials, no leaked UPC codes, no caught in the wild horribly blurry cellphone pics etc.
You have to give them credit for that and I have to give you guys credit for spending your time running up 100 pages on something that doesn't exist. Then again, I just read part of it so I'm a sheep in the pile too.

Maybe its still in work . When I watch Sonys a900 I guess they must have finished its body design within the last 5 hours. And does really anybody believe those leaked print stuff?
