Myself I could care less about who is better Canon or Nikon they will battle back and forth forever. I have owned both systems and loved both only reason for me to stay is lenses. I like Canon's line up better. But wait and see Nikon will add a killer camera followed by Canon as long as we keep buying they could care less they are getting richer all the time. But I am bad I pre ordered the 50 after saying I am sticking with the 40 damn that Canon
I find it interesting that everyone in this discussion thread is making comparisons of Canon's 50D against Nikon's D3 and D700, while making outlandishly inaccurate claims of what Nikon does with its raw files.
Seriously folks, you all need to refocus your attention and recognize that the closest match for Canon's 50D is NOT the D3, D700, or for that matter the D300, but is the newly announced D90. And with that the D90 trounces the D50 in specifications and quality.
Absolutely right. The D700's competition will be announced next month, and it's looking like it will have 21 megapixels, 100% VF coverage, 3.2" high-def VGA screen, full weather sealing, etc .... and hopefully at the D700 price point or just above it.

Now THAT would be an absolutely awesome camera. Specially if it retains the Direct Print button.

You may now resume your self adulation.
I agree with you to tell you the truth I get rather tired of all this comparing Nikon and Canon when both systems are great

I defintely wasn't interested in comparing Nikon and Canon in this thread but everything I have read about the D90 doesn't impress me one bit. Nikon has some good cameras but I don't put the D90 in that category and from specs alone it certainly isn't any better than the 50D.
I will reserve my final decision when both are available for testing but so far I'm not remotely impressed with the D90. I owned a D300 for several months and I preferred the 40D's IQ to it both in detail and noise control.

It is aimed against D90/D300. Both are equal in IQ as far I can see. Like the D3/D700 duo. What I mentioned before was not competing against D3/D700 but beating some of their specs, too. That just gave me a good feeling, what we can expect from the new competitor in this segment.
As is almost always the case, it is not directly aimed at either. It sits between the D90 and D300, just like the new 5D will sit between the D300 and D700 in features. Every new Canon and Nikon camera released always sits somewhere between the competitor models in price and features.

3/ I dont mind 9 AF points. I wish they were arranged in a square or rectangle, but hey, it aint the end of the world. With most action, you stick to the center AF point anyway - and for non-moving objects, lock/recompose or use what used to be CF4-1. I lose maybe 1% of shots due to having a 9point AF instead of a 51pt AF. If someone cannot take good action photos with this, overwhelming odds are that they need to improve their technique, not get better AF. There will be a few people who shoot extreme action who will benefit from a denser/greater distribution of AFs, but those people are FAR fewer than the number complaining about the AF system. ...Show more →
As always, Vandit - I agree with your view entirely.

The D300 clearly outclassed the 40D in a number of areas. Only on paper. In Real World use, it does nothing that the 40D doesn't do at least as well.
Nothing.
I invite you to find any actual proof that the D300 is a better camera in use, Dan - but I'll be waiting a long time.

After researching what Canon and Nikon have to offer in Professional grade, semi-pro, pro-sumer, advanced amateur, amateur... . - it's mostly a matter of taste really.
If i had unlimited funding i would get a 5D mkII, D3, 1DsIII, 1DIII N, and a d90 to shoot movies + of course an arsenal of lenses (canon being easier to find...) (n:14-24, 24-70,70-200,300 c:16-35,24-70,70-200is,300is,24,35,50,85,135)
Well, here are a few :
Full weather sealing
51 points pro-AF (15 cross type) and 3D tracking
3" Hi rez LCD
custom auto-ISO
+/- 5 exposure compensation and 9-frames bracketing
optional grid
