Over here (Western Europe - the Netherlands) it is in the stores for almost 2 weeks now. Prices are dropping every week. If you are going to buy one now, you won't be the first for sure
Guess I need to take a trip to Amsterdam... Can't find any in stores here.
I got notified yesterday that mine was shipped and will be here Thursday. I will be able to find out first hand if it is an improvement over the 40D or not.
Relax, Jim. I won a 40D and played with a 50D last week-end for a couple of hours. The IQ under normal circumstances is definitely better with the 50D.

Be sure to check the differences in AI Servo and report back here

I will be looking at AI Servo mainly as it applies to BIF. I will also be looking for low light shooting situations to see how feather detail holds up to noise levels and cropping. I don't use in camera NR or NR in DPP. I rely on minor adjustments using NI when necessary.

Do you have a 40D? If you do could you please shoot two high ISO (e.g. 1600 and/or 3200) shots using both the 40D and 50D (using the same lens), then develop all shots using exactly same default DPP slider settings and post 100 percent crops of a small area that is in focus and contains high spatial frequency information; thanks very much in advance if you can do this.
Note 1 - the shots should be taken off a tripod, aperture around f/10 or f/11, MLU enabled, and use the "10" second timer if you don't have a remote cable release.
Note 2 - if the AF of either camera is not dead nuts, then focus manually (using an Angle Finder C if you own one). OBTW, if you do have an Angle Finder C don't forget to set your diopter setting prior to use; it's easy to overlook this.
Once again, thanks much if you can test both cameras.
I tried something close with the 1D2N. Given the lighting, I used f/8 vs. f/10 to get at least some shutter speed. DPP did not play nice with the 1D2N files so I reverted back to ACR. Using Noise Ninja, one can adjust luminance and chroma noise levels much like DPP to achieve the same results. I have re-posted some samples here:
I'm reasonably convinced that the 50D is capable of slightly better detail and low light performance than the 1D2N and I believed the 40D was pretty close to the 1D2N in previous comparisons I've performed. I've also found the 50D at ISO 3200 (with a little noise reduction) gets pretty close to the 1D2N at ISO 1600 with the same noise reduction as shown (pics 5&6).

Steve, first off thanks for going to all the trouble: it's highly appreciated. Second, I'd appreciate a clarification on your part regarding DPP. What "exactly" do you mean by "DPP did not play nice with the 1D2N files" in your statement above, thanks?
I looked at your first four 30Sep shots on page-1 and agree with your "detail comment" above with respect to highlights, and IMO there is no question the 50D's highlight detail is superior to that of the 1DIIN. However, I noticed the 1DIIN had greater shadow detail compared to that of the 50D. I'm not sure if the difference in shadow detail is due to ACR's tone curve(s) for the two cameras "or" a limitation in the 50D's DR due to the smaller pixel size. I'm going to have to give my "shadow detail observation" some more thought ... something is not quite right (running around now trying to find the bottle of Aspirin).

Can someone point me in the direction of a local retailer for the 50D in Atlanta? I know, for a fact, some stores up north already have them in stock.
Call Brad at Berger Brothers on Long Island (they're on the net).
Great personal service - bought mine over the phone on Monday. Brad received it and shipped it yesterday and it's riding around my hometown on the "little brown truck" as we speak. If he has one for you, you should get it before the weekend! If he doesn't, he'll get one pretty quick.
Has anyone else ordered from Berger Brothers? I just heard of them the other day and heard that they do currently have the 50Ds in stock. Reputable? Shady?
