To my well trained eyes , the noise in both shots is identical.
Great achievement, considering the 50% more megapixels. Certainly no 1-1.5 steps improvement, though.
Q: So, where does Canon get the "1.5 stops" number from?
A: From their marketing department

or from 40D NR off and 50D NR on max
and comparing in-cam jpgs
Just picked up a 50D today in Louisville. Here is a link to some quick comps I did with the 1D2N. Shots were taken in raw and converted in DPP/Standard. Shot at ISO 1600. Only adjustments were to WB (Tungsten). There are two shots from each cam with NR off and Auto or Std (50D). These are converted to JPG.
My initial impression is that Canon has pulled a Nikon here and improved ISO at the expense of detail. Still, the 50D looks pretty good.

Would you characterize the 50D RAW files as being soft (as in softer than you are used to)?
What do you mean by "pulled a Nikon"..? Is there NR applied (in-camera) to the RAW file in your opinion?
Sorry, I shouldn't have said that. I should spend more time the this cam before reaching any conclusions. I just thought someone may find the samples useful.

I find them usefull, because they are the only samples showing the effect of noise reduction on exactly the same scene

The samples are useful indeed... But I was intrigued by your initial impression. Please report back if you have made a conclusion regarding RAW file quality.
hello,
I cannot find the pdf with the 50D manual, sorry.
Using a 4gb card in RAW, it says 178 pictures
For those who are more interested in quality a low iso,
here you have a crop 1:1 of a picture from DPP, with no
changes at all (ANY), only sharpening set from default 3 to 4, noise reduction completely set to 0, Picture Style:Neutral.

Canon 70-200/4L IS, 5.6, ISO 100
That looks really good... Just for my understanding: did you shot this in RAW and converted it through DPP?
yes, I took the picture in Canon 50D RAW, processed in last version of DPP (it came with the camera), using Picture Style Neutral, all parameters by default, except Sharpening set to 4 (you can set from 0 to 10), and Noise reduction set to 0. Crop is 1:1.

happy? yes! ;-)
I'm going now to test it even more, as it looks not a lot of people got this camera yet, and is having a lot of trouble to buy it. I feel like I can help other people here now, showing what the camera can do, as lots of people have helped me in the past.
The handling of the camera compared to my canon 5D is worlds apart. The feel of the camera is really good, fast, nice viewfinder, lots of customization, the live view is great, and the LCD is awesome! now the pictures look better in the LCD than the computer ;-)

Yeah, I am in doubt wether to buy one myself. Luckily it is readily available in the stores where I come from
I think the higher rez LCD and Micro Adjustment feature are really cool. The low ISO IQ looks excellent. But I am a bit concerned about the high ISO quality (ISO 1600 and 3200) and the AI Servo tracking. I would like to use it also for birding (BIF). I am also not very fond of 1.6x crop viewfinders. It has been a while since I shot a crop cam and FF gives you a much brighter and bigger VF. Anyway, I guess I will have to try one out at the store myself
One more question: how do you think lower end zoom lenses are holding up on the 50D (sharpness/resolution/details)? Maybe the high pixel density demands that you use high quality glass to get the most out of the sensor? Or do you recon that lower end zooms are still acceptable?
This camera is really tempting me...
I'm debating myself whether I should upgrade to 5DII or keep 5D and buy 50D.
I'm leaning towards the latter choice.
Any suggestion?
I knew I needed more time to reach any conclusions and still do. I have been experimenting with ACR vs DPP. Softness issues are related to noise reduction in DPP. When converting with ACR, noise is less well controlled but detail is much better. I think I would rather do my own noise reduction in NN and retain detail. With no noise reduction, the 50D files converted in ACR are showing as much detail, or maybe a little more (in some cases) than the 1D2N. Noise levels are about the same or maybe slightly better than 1D2N, which is pretty good considering the increase in mpx.. I also think the NO NR noise levels are better than the D300. I'm much more encouraged today than last night.
