burningheart, I'd like to know how you set up for the shot. e.g. tripod, tripod head, timer release, mirror lockup, and anything else that would affect stability for such a shot. Did you focus manually, or use AF ?
The other day I was trying to shoot with a 600mm plus 2x plus 1.4x on a 1D2 and the results were quite disappointing. It seemed like I only had to breath near the camera and the image shook. It didn't help that I was running out of light as the lunar eclipse ran its course.
I did also take a few other shots with TC 1.4, TC 2.0 and both TC 1.4 and 2.0 mounted together (that shot was at ISO 3200). I'm not overly pleased with my 2.0. The 1.4 wasn't too bad,
I am sure the 800 is a great lens. What I am not so sure about is how much of the IQ in the image posted is due to the lens and how much is due to the photographer.
Romy has consistently posted great shots of the moon (and everything else too) on his pbase site (liquidstone) using his Sigma 300-800. I have the same Sigma lens but have never been able to come close to the IQ he gets.
IMHO the support system (tripod, gimbal head, and plates) are much more important than the optics in the lens when shooting a super tele. I use a Gitzh 1410 with a Bogen 3421 head and am quite happy with it as a general purpose support system.
But I have always gotten better IQ shooting off the tripod and head I use for my astronomy telescope (an Orion Atlas) than any photography tripod I have.
