Magnus is editor in chief of the magazine Kamera & Bild (Camera & Picture). Why are you discussing YMCA?

I'd assume Japan first.

Chris

"I'd LOVE for Canon to release a 5DII that competes directly with the D700, but I'm not holding my breath that this is the release that heralds it"

Well, I am holding mine! I am desperate for Canon to announce their new full frame models, I'm so tired of crop sensors, but the 5D doesn't have live view. Now that the western economies are going down the plug hole money is harder to come by, so I would love a new cheaper Canon full frame camera for around double the price of the 40D. If Canon only bring out another £4000 top of the line sports cam I'm going to be gutted.

I would have to seriously consider the D700

Heh... watch... they come out with another Rebel... a 1200D or something like that. Funny how the momentum on Canon's side has been drifting towards the consumer, mass market side. Nikon's strategy has been quite the opposite- putting out some amazing high end bodies recently. It's going to be a tough call. If they release another silly consumer body I am seriously jumping ship.

David,

Call me an old cynic, but I will eat all the humble pie in the world if Canon release something better than a full frame 40D with less FPS, I honestly think the D700 came out of left-field, and didn't give them time to respond, 5D III maybe, 5D II probably not.

At $1,900 USD will all give us some pause to think, especially those who might have been thinking about jumping to the dark side. By the time it actually hits reputable retailers by Christmas 08, we might see it priced between $1,700 - $1,800.

Yeah, actually I think I might just buy a D700 if the 5dII is what I think it will be.

The D700 is calling me quite strongly, a D300 and D700 pair would be almost exactly what I'd want, I hope Canon responds but they seem a little lethargic and complacent these days.

That said I'd be loath to give up my 70-200 f/4L IS, I don't fancy lugging a heavy 2.8 around all day.

The D700 will probably be marginally better in handling, but don't expect it to be better in IQ than the 5DMkII. You do gain with the built-in flash and the Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8G, but if you're vested in Canon glass, is it worth it?

And the weather sealing....and the pro-grade AF......and the 8 FPS.....and the ISO 12800......

Before anyone else says it, I realise I'm speculating on a model that I don't know the spec of, I'm purely basing it on the (I think reasonable) assumption that the 5DII will just be a full-frame 40D, no-one's complaining about the IQ, the 5D is still up there with the best 3 years on, but Canon is seriously lagging in the features dept. at the moment.

The same paper and same man writing (Magnus fröderberg) had an article a few days ago. And then they wrote September 22

And the announcement is about new Canon equipment. So that can be a printer, video or copying-machine

With Digic III and 14-bit ADCs, high ISO will be the same. However, Nikon in-camera processing is better than Canon, so your jpegs will be better - raw images will be about the same.

With the AF, we'll have to see about it, in my opinion I doubt it will be considerably better. Yes, the 8 FPS is a positive for the D700.

Can we create a new forum entitled '5d rumor mill', and place this along with the other umpteen threads re: 5d speculation there?

Maybe offer a prize to the person who made the most accurate prediction, 6 months from now!

We don't even know if it's a camera or a copying machine and you start writing about the specs

The assumption is that the 5D replacement will be a FF 40D with a little better AF, ISO and LCD for $1,900.

Good riddance to the people threatening to jump ship. It honestly reminds me of the people who proclaimed they would move out of the USA if Bush was elected, and then reiterated their intention if he was re-elected. Those people still live here...

You're going to sell off all of your glass and bodies for a significant loss, and move to a more expensive camera and a system that charges considerably more for the same glass? For what? Marginally better pictures at best?

It's silly. Those people aren't going anywhere.
