I saw it, but only barely, on my laptop screen. Now on my usual desktop display, the banding is pretty obvious.

Definitely see it in the Ferris wheel pic--quite clearly.

I can only see it in the 300-400% blow-ups and I agree that it doesn't look like traditional banding. I can't see it at all at 100%.

Take any image, including a film image, and blow it up 400% and you'll see all kinds of things. Remember the movie Blow-Up?

Unintentional to the OP these images have become a test for the monitor quality. If anybody can't see them loud and clear at 100%, I'm sorry to tell you, something wrong with your monitor. Check and calibrate it, pay attention to the black level and contrast.

I see banding clearly in both pics at 100%.

Dave - not sure what your point is. I think the OP has both a legitimate observation and concern.

I'm surprised nobody has asked, but for the OP where is the EXIF data in your photos?

Interesting but your example show something that might be banding in an under exposed portion of the photo. I think many of us have cameras that show this type of problem. For example see this recent post in the Canon forum :https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/672173

However, the banding in the OP's second photo in not in an underexposed portion of the photo.

Hi revoke99
I can clearly see banding across the entire ferris wheel shot. The lines go all the way from edge to edge, and are also visible in the lighter tones of the sky between the bars of the ferris wheel and to the left and right of the park light in the bottom left hand corner. That's at 100% without blowing it up to extremes.

While not visible on the goats face, the lines are clearly visible across the goats body, and the background.
It really seems to be a problem across the entire sensor.

I doubt this would result from a dropped camera, as this thing's built like a tank, and there was a review by Jim Reed (jimreedphoto.com) where the camera was really put through its paces with extreme whether.

At ISO 200, the banding just shouldn't be there under/over exposed or not.

I had the fortunate opportunity to view and try out the D700 at Ebisu Gardens in Tokyo, Japan a few weekends ago where Nikon had a weekend consumer event.
We could take some shots with our own memory cards for take away. Having just scrutinized the photographs I took, I can see no banding whatsoever (ISO 400, model on stage with brightly lit flowers in background).
On side, whether the cameras at the event were consumer grade or not I don't know.

I would hope and expect your replacement to work just fine; let us know!

PS This is my first post.

It's definitely banding a la the D200, clear as day.

Here's another thread on the subject: http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=180921

Well I'm still waiting from ritz..They told me once they receive the camera they have to refund my card then place another order which will take 5 to 7 days...Sucks..I'm pretty sure I will be okay with my new camera. I haven't read this anywhere else and lets just hope this was just one bad body..

There's no banding in the thread mentioned. If you're referring to the small insert: that's pouring rain.

OP, yep, I can clearly see the banding in your images, especially in the clear blue sky. Hope the new camera will prove better!
