I would just bump up the ISO to 800-1600 and shoot, the IQ from 1Ds Mark III is still great....
I know when the lighting is good and everything is right, the stunning images from the 200/2.0 will come....we have to wait..
I understand your points, Lide.
However, we should keep in mind that anchoring the lens on any sort of a pod would alter the character of its use. For one, I have never used my 200 f/1.8 on a pod as I like to shoot with it while moving about (I don't do court sports).
Secondly, the 200 f/2 IS would also benefit from high ISO as much as the 200 f/1.8 does....except at any ISO the 200 f/2 IS would always have a few stops shutter speed advantage regarding camera/lens shake. Again, tripod is the only way you could continue to shoot with the 200 f/1.8 in the kind of a low light where hand-held 200 f/2 IS still gives fine results.
(Obviously, we are not talking action photography here. )
