can't we just wait till everything settles down? i mean, canon must be aware of Nikon happenings. whatever happened to people advising to invest on lenses and not the body because bodies come and go.

Will it have colour focus tracking? 51 point AF? Built-in flash? Zeiss lens compatability, i.e. auto-aperture? ISO 25600? EF-S lens compatibility? Weather sealing? 8fps?
I suspect it will be announced in August or September and have 16 megapixels, 6fps, and probably ISO 12800, but will Canon haemorrhage 1Ds3 sales to beat the D700? If it has a new more accurate and reliable focussing system with 6fps and weather sealing it will certainly hit 1 series sales very hard. Sure, image quality will be better than anything Nikon currently offers, but 12 megapixel is a bit of a watershed for IQ. Many pros feel they don't need more than that. And Nikon's in-camera processing is very good....Show more →
As I stated in an another thread I don't think Canon would care if 1Ds III sales dropped to their natural levels ie only bought by working pros, if the new camera generates more revenues than that lost. Bottom line is paramount.
I'd be happy with 16MP if they can deliver the IQ and seeing how low the 1D III noise is, a 16MP 5D II would have same sized pixels and had 18 month more improvement, so should be even better. I want more than 12MP for the larger prints and better cropability for wild life.

A: When I left Nikon their 70~200AFS/VR was and IMO still is superior to the Canon version.
B: Canon had plenty of time to 'catch up'/ coupled with their inane antics over the 1DMKIII and the actual superiority of the new Nikon products, I no longer believe they have the will or the skill to actually catch up anymore.
You are of course entitled to your opinion and to use Nikon, Canon or whatever brand you want.
Canon sell more dslr's than anyone else, they were comfortably the most advanced manufacturer with innovative products and they've had a poor year (with pro dslrs, the amateur ones have sold billions) and they don't become bad overnight.
I've been making money with Canon gear and I don't think there's a massive reason for me to change. Competiton from Nikon is only going to make them try harder.
As someone sensibly said, it's the photographer, not the gear.

Really? Well, I agree if you are shooting using a crop body. On a FF camera that the D700 is, the Canon's counterpart will leave the Nikkor behind. The corner performance of that Nikkor lens suffers...
I don't have the $$ to switch over, and Nikon doesn't have the primes I want (yet). And I think in 18-24 months things will be more even (a long time for bodies, but not much for good glass), and the last thing in the world I'd want to do is switch due to a body and then switch back for glass.

The body is very attempting and I believe 5D successor can’t match it in features although it’s probably going to be cheaper. There is still one big issue for me. Nikon doesn’t have the lenses I bought Canon for, which includes 24mm F1.4, 35mm F1.4, 50mm F1.2 and 85mm F1.2.
EXACTLY! I would sell all my Canon gear today and be first in line for a D700 if Nikon had equivalents to these lenses.
Canon saved my bacon for sure. When I moved to the 1D/16~35mm/550EX flash system it was like light years ahead of anything Nikon and gave me terrific advantages ~~
The gear is everything ~~ the photographer only aims it ~ creative studio chappies exempted, naturally.
I'm very grateful to Canon, for providing reliable equipment that made my recent career so successful ~ make no mistake it was the camera and the reliability of the system ~~ with Canon today that's fragmented ~ my recent 5D has shown me how a camera can work ~ my 1DMKIII how a camera should not work.
In my predicament, right now the Nikon D700 seems exactly what's missing from the Canon range ~ I basically want a good P&S, my best was the D1x from Nikon ~ but that had a whole lot of issues that did not disappear until the D3 ~ five years? I don't want to wait another 5 years for Canon to sort out their 'core problems' ~ I'll give them another 2 months.
I've read where Nikon professional are trading in the white lenses ~ if I catch up with that ~ all the lens arguments are right out the window, if Nikon extend that to the general public
So I actually like Canon, they served me very well and I owe the last five years to them ~ the 2nd most successful in my career so far ~ and it was the reliability of the gear that put me there ~~ snap, pic, paid.

I'm still good with my 30D, and will be for years to come, so no, I will not be switching. I also like that I can use lenses from pretty much any older manual focus system with ease on the EOS system. I won't be giving that up.
I'm gonna switch. "Til Canon comes out with a new camera, then I'll switch back. But when Nikon comes out with a new camera....I guess I'll switch again....And then Canon...............and Nikon............(sound of head exploding) !!!!
Old sayings are the best. The grass is always greener.

That is not going to happen. Nikon will help out the PJ's to get them over because they are high net worth customers, and every time Nikon sees a bank of big white lenses at the Olympics, it hurts. Show Nikon your press pass and body of work, and they will bend over backwards, but the little people aren't even going to be able to find what they want in the shops.
Does anyone know why some who have switched to Nikon .....and have sold off all high end gear .....are coming back to Canon?
Right now I own both & have used my D3 in ways I could not do with any Canon.....I love my Canon glass......but the sharpness & low light of the Nikon D3 is amazing.
I currently have 2 1D MK3's, 40D & Rebel XTi....(I think my Rebel is sharper than the others...)
I have seen atleast 3 on the Buy & sell doing that...

all the people i talked to that did that did it for one reason: Canon's glass. the fact that Nikon doesn't have good constant f4 zooms, good AF-S fast primes and the fact that the prices for the Nikon long teles with VR are prices so high.
truth be told, if the 500 F4 VR was prices around 6k, i would be shooting Nikon already..
if 5D replacement has similar or better high iso performance as D3, pair that with fast L-primes .. that'd be awesome. who would need l ight to shoot? lol jp
