Ha! I held a friend's Nikon and quickly figured out that it would take too long to get used to turning everything the opposite. Maybe if I used it in the southern hemisphere?
Ha Ha! I have a theory as to why the controls move in the opposite direction. Canon was probably targeting the US and European markets and Nikon was targeting the UK and Australian markets.

when nikon have the same line of lens as canon, and the SAME PRICE as canon's, I will be happily to switch. but this is not an option in any near future. so I am stuck with canon now.
I will stick with Canon, Its the Quality/affordability/ and selection of glass that puts canon on top for me. does not matter what body you really use, that just has the bells and wiseless. Canons Technoogy is in its glass which holds my loyalty.
