p.3 #1 · 10-stop ND photos

Now that I stumbled across THIS thread, I've just GOT to buy another filter.

This website costs me a fortune.

Btw, there's a huge difference between a 6 and 10 stop filter. If you can get a 30 second exposure with a 10 stop, then the 6 stop will only give you a 1.9 second exposure...

Just processed another photo from last weekend, same location. The long exposure effect isn't quite as pronounced but still looks ok I think...

Correct. I'm not after super long exposures in the middle of the day. I'm after the ability to get longer exposures in twilight hours, which is why I went with the 6-stop rather than the 10-stop. But you're right, there is a marked difference between the two.

And that is the issue with these filters. They are in my opinion being overused. Although there are some very good shots here there are also some average ones where the shot is heavily reliant on what I personally consider to be a bit of a gimmick. Long exposures are great, but using a 10 stop filter alone does not make good photos. I think in some cases the long exposure effect is used at the expense of image content.

I have one of these filters, I think it's great, but I seldom find it useful.

Alex,

How many of the landscape images here on FM do you reckon are produced with 6-10 stop ND filters? 1%? 2%? Not exactly what I'd call overused .

Of course it can be bit of a gimmick and I agree that using a 10 stop filter alone does not make good photos. I do, however, find them a great tool (one of many) in landscape photography and whether they are useful or not really comes down to one's creativity.

Happy shooting, filters or not

Just so you know... all the Vari-ND is is two polarizers. So, if you can't actually use it with your polarizer as well. Also, it does produce some weird effects at or beyond the 8 stop mark.

Thanks for the heads up! There is a warning in the literature that comes with the gizmo that warns of the potential for weird effects when going beyond 8 stops. I guess some experimentation lies ahead. Odd tho, that they sell the add-on 5 stop ND for the vari ND. Specially matched to the vari ND perhaps? I dunno....

CHeers!

Hi there, this post is pretty old so I hope i'll get a response
I've got a question about the ND110 filtre from B+W (= 10 stop), i'm considering to buy it. I want to use it on a canon 10-22mm, but is it a problem to use the filtre at 10mm, or are the edges of the filter then in sight. (I hope my english is correct). So I mean if there is vignetting @ 10mm?(I use it on a canon 400D).
I'll be waiting for a response

Greetings,

Andreas

Well I've got one but having owned it for almost 9 months I've virtually not used it. Being inland and away from any suitable water I just haven't really needed it. Can't wait till I get a chance to use it properly though my new lens is a 77mm thread and the filter is 67mm

Just curious but do you guys find the filters have a warm cast to them? And they do seem to vignette quite a lot.
I've got the 10 stop in 67mm and the 6 stop in 77mm and both have very similar vignetting and casts to them.

I'm pretty certain there will be. I get vignetting @ 10mm with a 6 stop B+W ND and I get vignetting @ 18mm with a 10 stop B+W ND so I guess you will get some. Should be fixable in post but I think you'll be hard pushed to avoid it altogether when shooting.
