So a related question to those using film. What hardware and software are people using to do these scans. I've got a Nikon Coolscan V ED and I'm wondering if its up to the task of generating these results. I'm using it at 4000 dpi. Used the Nikon Software for quite a while but may need to switch away from it since it only works on my old XP laptop. So viewscan and silverfast are the choices I know of. Been playing with both. Not sure yet which I will choose.
Are you doing the scans yourself or having them done by a professional lab? Also, what dpi are you using?
I wish I had a Coolscan V. Your scanner is in the top 1 or 2% of scanners in the thread, you just need to do the leg work to make it work.
I absolutely suggest VueScan. And Photoshop. most of what you need to do a scan properly is going to be found in curves/levels, spot heal and a downsizing algorithm. Assuming I properly cropped my frame in VueScan, I could absolutely live with JUST those 4.
I'm also a big fan of adding ColorPerfect (http://www.c-f-systems.com/Plug-ins.html) to the software mix. I'm doing raw scans and convert them with CF, way easier to get the colors from negs right compared to Vuescan+PS alone in my opinion.
Thanks for the input. Was not familiar with ColorPerfect at all. Like the idea of using the Raw from vuescan. Did go back and tried my old Nikon software and noticed it also outputs NEF so I'm wondering about doing raw flow with that as well. Having a tough time getting colors I like at all in any of the scan software (Nikon, Silverfast, or ViewScan) so maybe this will help.
Forgot to mention I bought this scanner about 4 years ago and used it to convert about 350 sets of negatives with it but I lost the recipe I used and I'm struggling to work it out again. Of course it might be the first set of negatives I chose to work with which are 40 years old.
The Nikon software acts just like I remember it where the GEM module and DEE are impossible to get right IMO.

Is there a special thread just on scanning?...Show more →
I had a hard time getting any decent scans from color negs with Vuescan alone. Searched for some instruction/tutorials for Vuescan, but most of them referred to the raw-scan + CP workflow. Haven't looked back since then.
Not sure all software can do those (linear) raw scans, don't have experience with the Nikon software. In Vuescan it's only the pro edition. These files are outputted as tiffs, not dng/nef (see this guide: http://www.colorneg.com/scanning-slides-and-negatives/scans/Hamrick-Software/VueScan/)
A recent shot taken in a small Swedish harbour. Developing the film (expired Fomapan 100) was easy compared to scanning.
The result is a bit brighter than the original scenery. Really have to improve my scanning workflow.
Fordson, framed too generous, Fujica GL690, Fomapan 100 in Rodinal
Corposant: the light is amazing to my eyes, a perfect fit for the scene.
Tom and Krosavcheg: thanks, I'm glad you like the Fordson ;-)
I'm still struggling with my scanner, hopefully the scans get better with more practice, so here's another shot from a small harbour: Lolita von georgsfoto auf Flickr
"Lolita" til salg (for sale), Danmark, I have to apologize for this rather tasteless pictorial joke
Bronica S2a (aftermarket focusing screen out of whack, only a couple shots came out halfway useable), Fomapan 100, developed in Rodinal 1:50
first I failed loading my Fuji Polaroid film, next, I failed with composition, amongst the many other areas of failure-isms ! the last fail was hurrying up and photographing my photograph with a digital cellphone camera, whoa is me, yet I share with you my results, to share my wallows!
I sadly double exposed my long to frame subjects. I used my Rollei 6008 Pro, with the Rollei Zeiss 85mm 2.8 HFT PQS lens, mounted to my Vanguard Abeo 323AB Tripod with BBH-200 Ball Head, and finally I sadly rushed to show and tell, that I used my Samsung Galaxy S IV's camera to take a picture within a picture, does that even make sense? this was shot at f/11 in door with loads of sunlight, however, the over exposed may be due to the fact that the films, if it could still be called film, high ISO of 3000!
