um to be honest I thought you were trolling until I saw your flickr.
ok the way this works is you have a few types of film, but modern negatives all work basically the same way but Ill talk about b&w since it's simpler and you can extrapolate color from it. you have an emulsion, or a chemical compound, of light sensitive material covering a transparent back (or metal, or paper, really anything). ok this light sensitive material is exposed to a burst of light and reacts by forming a crystal, but as long as no additional light hits it there will be no further growth on that site.
developing means you add another chemical to it that reacts with that photochemical emulsion to form silver, the more silver the denser the spot and the brighter it becomes when inverted. you use a stop bath to mostly stop that reaction. a fixer then eats up the remaining light sensitive material so you do not continue to develop past where you want.
ok, color negative basically does the same thing but is color sensitive, and slides leave you with a positive rather than a negative.
when you shoot a polaroid, you are actually doing all of that in a self contained little package.
what you are describing is relatively close to digital capture, ie light hitting your capture medium and being captured directly, even if it is interpreted into data by a computer.
the tl;dr is that slides and negatives have to be developed with chemicals before being exposed to any more light....Show more →
These are the problems a ninny faces when they do research online only, and still can't figure things out, yet proceeds to buy expensive items, just to stay at a standstill, and look dweebish, and really dumb! I thought I knew what was going on, so i went on and purchased a film camera, and then engaged in film mutilation! For the most part a very helpful member, carstenw, tried to pump my brain full of knowledge, but even then, they are just human working with, well, me! He even explained to me that i most likely destroyed my fuji velvia 100, as pictured below, and exposed to flash light, thanks to the GENIUS that is I! So, with all of this still dripping slowly into my minute brain, I still had the i am a mensa member moment, to ask serious questions, that A, either a untaught 6 year old would ask, or 2., a seriously trollish sounding google user dude would ask! Oy vay, i need to do serious research, and go to a school, or camera center! Thank God for you all here!
