if you're one of those people who likes split prisms, I dont see why you shouldn't get one though.

personally I hate them and replaced all 3 of my OM series cameras' screens with matte with a microprism spot.

I love the result though. Portra 400.

Love the colors and tones here.

I hate it too. That is why I have canon S-type for my D700 instead of split one with D300s I use to have. I think it is essential for my style of shooting for anything other rangefinder. That is also why I haven't fully convert to leica M. But in this case, I feel i might have to. It ciuld be just because i am lack the experience of MF. And feel a bit fruatrated as a beginner.

I also think I should have get a contax645 for my kids picture than this one to start with.

A VF will make things around the edges darker, and you won't be able to magnify like you can with the WLF. I don't think it would necessarily make focusing much easier. It's also very heavy - after a roll holding the camera up to your eye, the weight will be noticeable.

Your picture of your kids is cute, but you should try out your Hasselblad outdoors with plenty of light and keep the shutter speed faster than 1/125 if you can.

This one might be at 1/60s.

Do you guys think a upgraded screen a neccessary to get it usable? Or with MF like Hassy, I just have to slow down.

You have to slow down but most important you have to have LIGHT... or raise the iso, or grab a tripod... I am seeing that grabbing focus with a WLF is not so fast anymore... 1/60 is shaky territory for the hassy, at least it is for me..

The Contax 645 also has a dark screen, and the AF is quite slow. I am not sure it would really help you get better shots of kids.

if you wanna do MF and take pictures of kids in the dark then 1. good luck to you and 2. try a rangefinder and a flash.

I think the Mamiya 6 and 7 are the best, personally.

a scan from today, first roll in Xtol seems much preferable to rodinal, especially for a film like Acros:

M2 + Summicron 50 DR

btw the negatives scanned really flat with huge headroom, so this one is very heavily edited to match what I saw in my head when I saw the light; my apologies if you do not fancy yourself a Ralph Gibson wannabe like I do.

Even if your not into landscape photography you have to admire the work that Ben Horne does with large format gear, his recent post here in the landscape thread.....

dropbox is blocking the image from getting parsed by the FM server.

rehosting is the best option, you might want to take A.Rod's offer.

glad you like your Pentax Patrick! lovely image, and 400h sure is great huh? it kind of flies under the radar of Portra 400. Are you finding your 105 sharp? Mine certainly was.

I wussed out under it's immense weight though; Ill stick to 35mm for handheld and 4x5 for otherwise lol.

here's another small format shot from me:

do all films need to be developed first? cant i scan them straight out of the camera? i thought film turned to tiny images on a negative held up to light, and seen?i am really lame.

um to be honest I thought you were trolling until I saw your flickr.

ok the way this works is you have a few types of film, but modern negatives all work basically the same way but Ill talk about b&w since it's simpler and you can extrapolate color from it. you have an emulsion, or a chemical compound, of light sensitive material covering a transparent back (or metal, or paper, really anything). ok this light sensitive material is exposed to a burst of light and reacts by forming a crystal, but as long as no additional light hits it there will be no further growth on that site.

developing means you add another chemical to it that reacts with that photochemical emulsion to form silver, the more silver the denser the spot and the brighter it becomes when inverted. you use a stop bath to mostly stop that reaction. a fixer then eats up the remaining light sensitive material so you do not continue to develop past where you want.

ok, color negative basically does the same thing but is color sensitive, and slides leave you with a positive rather than a negative.

when you shoot a polaroid, you are actually doing all of that in a self contained little package.

what you are describing is relatively close to digital capture, ie light hitting your capture medium and being captured directly, even if it is interpreted into data by a computer.

the tl;dr is that slides and negatives have to be developed with chemicals before being exposed to any more light.

These are the problems a ninny faces when they do research online only, and still can't figure things out, yet proceeds to buy expensive items, just to stay at a standstill, and look dweebish, and really dumb! I thought I knew what was going on, so i went on and purchased a film camera, and then engaged in film mutilation! For the most part a very helpful member, carstenw, tried to pump my brain full of knowledge, but even then, they are just human working with, well, me! He even explained to me that i most likely destroyed my fuji velvia 100, as pictured below, and exposed to flash light, thanks to the GENIUS that is I! So, with all of this still dripping slowly into my minute brain, I still had the i am a mensa member moment, to ask serious questions, that A, either a untaught 6 year old would ask, or 2., a seriously trollish sounding google user dude would ask! Oy vay, i need to do serious research, and go to a school, or camera center! Thank God for you all here!
