It was expired and I bought all that they had. The normal price for TMax here is 500 yen or more a roll. I buy most of my film from B&H. For example a pro-pack of Provia 100F costs 22,000 yen or so last time I checked here and it's only $100 from B&H.

Mawz, thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to take a look at those.

Great thread with good info and sample pics for us film shooters.... I recently shot a few rolls of Ektar 100 with my FE2 and am not too pleased with my results outdoors. For indoor shots (without flash), the skin tones are fairly good and the colors usually look pretty accurate. Mostly all of the landscape shots I have taken have colors which are off - mainly blues, greens, and skin tones. These colors seem to have a grey tinge to them and they look pastel to my eye. I will try to post some sample pics when I find the time. Does anyone else have a similar experience? I don't imagine the lab could be messing up the processing as it has happened on a few occasions. Also, any recommendations (35mm & 120) for landscape B&W shots? I haven't been too pleased with the B&W (C41) film I have been trying out. Thanks.

Gary,

For scanning B&W C-41, I like Ilford's XP2 Super rated at ISO 200. It doesn't improved the grain, but does bring a silvery glow to the highlights and better overall contrast.

Ilford XP2 Super shot at ISO 200, standard C-41 development

Sample of the grain from the above image scanned at 4000dpi on a Nikon LS-4000 scanner.

My Epson 4990/Silverfast Ai combo wasn't so kind on the grain, but I think you still get a feel for the nature of the film.

If you wish to shoot a silver B&W film, there are two classes of film. There are T-grain films like T-Max and Delta which offer very fine grain and a very linear response and there are traditional grain films like Tri-X and HP5+ which have larger grain, but a longer toe and shoulder. There are some other types as well, but these are the two main classes of panchromatic B&W films.

As far as the Ektar issue goes, I have rather mixed feelings about that film as well. The grain is very fine, but its dynamic range is much more limited than other color neg films I like to use. It has much wider latitude than E-6, but much less than something like Portra 160VC or Pro160S.

Thanks mrladewig - very good information. I haven't tried 160VC or 160S in a while and will do so next week. I prefer fairly saturated colors with my landscapes so one of these two films may do the trick. I will be primarily using this B&W film in my MF camera but also want to get some "authentic" looking landscape shots with my old Zeiss folder camera. Thanks again.

I'd recommend you start with Portra 160VC, and remember that during scanning you can control the saturation of the film.

I'm surprised we haven't seen more of this recently. My local shop still has a bit on the shelf and I couldn't remember ever having shot this before, so I picked up a few rolls to try out. I can't say that I especially like the film. I got a few decent shots from my first roll though they all appeared slightly underexposed for my tastes.

Damn Nate your scans really have a lot of snap
They look like digital for the saturation and tonal range except they have all the good qualities of film as well!

Thanks, the latest batch of color negative scans are the best I've had from my lab yet, but these slide scans do need just a tad more resolution, but I am happy with the colors. I tweaked tweaked the color and contrast just a bit on the E100VS shots, but in my in my opinion the Velvia shots were perfect as is.
