AMAZING! I'd even be super proud of that shot that "doesn't work"
Thank you. I screwed that one in more ways than one. I shot two slides and a part of my dark cloth was in both, the better one having more of the cloth over the sky. I also didn't include enough of the ice. I think there is too much mid-ground for the very little foreground. A couple more reasons too. But I appreciate that. Just disappointed compared to what I had wanted out of it. I rushed way too quickly and paid for it.

Hi, thanks for the kind words. I had really be struggling with my photographic direction after almost being killed in Mongolia, twice, then attending a terribly-run Magnum workshop in Korea. I was taking some time off.
In the mean time my family and I traveled to Hokkaido for Christmas and New Years to have some fun in the snow and ice; we live on a tropical island, so it's fun for us to go somewhere cold in the winter. Anyway, on 12/29 I was walking back to my hotel and not even a few meters from being safely inside my hotel I slipped on a patch of ice in a crosswalk. Some sort of freak accident. I immediately felt and heard my leg snap. I had to be dragged out of the street to the sidewalk. The next 23 hours were a complete and utter nightmare. Japan has a medical system that doesn't belong in the modern world. I sat in an ambulance for 45+ minutes waiting to find an ER willing to take me. Finally one decided to take me, but only with the understanding I'd immediately be discharged after basic triage. Sure enough 30 minutes after getting there I was out on my ass in a taxi with no pain medication. I then had to buy a ticket, fly 6 hours back home, change flights once and go to my local ER at our American hospital. I finally got some pain relief and a surgery date.
Now, it's 3 weeks later, I'm in a cast for another 4 weeks and dying to shoot. I think I have my mojo back, but I'm basically bedridden. It's terrible. ...Show more →
So my cast is off, I wrote up a blurb about my trip to Mongolia: nateventure.blogspot.com/2012/02/mongolian-madness.html
I've shot nearly 20 rolls of film in the last month, so things are looking up. I got my cast off, but still can't really walk for another 6 weeks. Somehow I am not getting email updates on this thread.

I know, right? Those files are huge. It seems kind of screwed up to be getting decent BIG scans for cheap and complain that they are too big, but that's exactly how I feel.
The first two times I used them, they were pretty slow. This last time it was a bit more than week turnaround. Not too bad in my mind. I also asked for lower contrast scans to prevent blown out highlights and they complied for the most part. I'll continue to use them.
Nice E100VS shots. That's a nice film that I've only used once or twice.
They've underwhelmed me one too many times. I'll stick to NCPS.

+1 - you could go nuts looking at all the film comparisons.
I remember Nate chiding me several pages back on mixing and matching film varieties while shooting. While I understand the nature of his argument, I still really enjoy shooting all types of film, though like everybody, I have my favorites.
For me continuity matters more. I'm not testing film, I'm taking pictures. I wish I never would have even tried other films, but it's good that I have I suppose.

I'd rather make a pin hole camera out of a tissue box.
OUCH!!!!
By the by ... just read your recent blog post. Turned my ho-hum catastrophe of a morning with a bed hopping three year old into a pleasant one. Thanks for posting what you do, it's an excellent read.

I saw you went with an R4. That's a better choice, how do you like it?
Glad to hear you say that! Going good do far - have my first negs drying now. Spacing and exposure seem consistent - will post some after I get them scanned. It was really a joy to carry ... Went on a semi nature hike and it was lighter than anything I've carried before.

Wow I was wondering why I hadn't heard from or seen you Nate! Glad you're on the mend, I can't imagine how uncomfortable those flights must have been
I look forward to seeing your next shots and wish you a speedy recovery to full mobility.
They were pretty bad. I now walk with a pretty radical limp. Not sure if it's going to get better or not.

Stay positive mate! As long as there isn't serious joint damage the body is quite resilient.
For such a mobile person as yourself I imagine it is disheartening.
If you want to chat you have my e-mail.
Aim for little victories every day, and make note of every improvement, it will make it a lot easier.

Thrice - Like the new look.
Unfortunately not a film shot, but an IR shot with the M9. IR is ever so flattering

Are you doing any type of PT? You are young and strong - I am sure you will overcome this. Agree with Thrice about small victories. And maybe some vodka. That usually helps.

Nate - glad to hear you're back shooting and on your feet (sort of). Your experience must have been harrowing to say the least - it definitely puts my experience in Asia in perspective.
The large one is a canvas (24x36 I think) and the others are are 2" thick gator foam core with clear plastic flat hangars stuck on with 3m sticky stuff (found them at michaels).
Zalmy- coming from mostly metal SLR cameras and MF monsters , this is pleasantly light and easy to use. All the controls are right where they should be - and other than having the rewind un-rewind on me, it was all easy and intuitive. It fits nicely in my (girl) hands without a grip and hangs around my neck or shoulder without pulling.
Focusing is almost as easy as with the mamiya, but I'm noticing that the higher shutter speed numbers are harder to see in the sunlight (not that it matters as I'm using it in AE mode anyway).
The lens is quite sharp wide open (from my one roll) and slow shutter speeds are easily hand hold able.
