Never shot as wide as a 21 with the F mount ("wided out" at 28mm with the 28mm f/2.8 AI-s, another fave), but I am a big fan of the 50mm f/1.2 AI-s. Haven't shot it much on film (somehow keep picking up the M-A instead of the F2), but historically it has been a favourite lens on digital Nikons. Has some tendency to flare in interesting ways, at f/2 is an extremely good performer, and is totally serviceable wide open when needed. Only downside is size/weight. Has basically the same footprint as a Noct-NIKKOR 58 f/1.2 but without the

Thanks both, made offers on both the 20/4 and 50/1.2 ais on eBay and got both of them for a reasonable price. My F kit will be complete paired with the 28/2 ais and 105/2.5 ais.

I picked up a bunch of attachments and a couple scanners this spring. Just looked at the "insane prices" now. Almost everything is up 250-400% in just 6 or 7 months.

I really like the Zeiss Planar ZF.2 50 1.4 - I use that on my F3P. The later/latest Milvus 50 1.4 is basically the same lens but in a case double the size which I find extremely unappealing.
The Zeiss Makro Planar ZF.2 50 f2 is also spectacular, only issue is it is a bit on the big side. Again avoid the latest Milvus version which is the same thing but twice the size. I guess "Zeiss" thought by making them huge they make them more impressive/desirable.

The Nikon 50 1.8 AI-s lenses are all very nice, with the 1.8 'long nose' IMO being the most desirable as the more recessed front element provides more lens shade.

Of course my favourite lens on Nikons is the CV 40 f2, but you asked about 50s!

The 20/3.5 AIS is a sleeper. I've had two of them. Very quick focus throw. Really good in the mid to near range. Used it a lot on digital when my kids were small. Examples here and here.

I think it wasn't until the 20/2.8 that they introduced CRC on a 20. For that reason the 24/2.8 was very popular.

CV made a 20/2.8 too.

105/2.5 is wonderful of course.

My favorite 50 for a manual camera is actually the 55/2.8 AIS Micro. The 50/1.4 AI has lots of planar vibe but I never fell in love with it. The old 50/2.0 is super sharp. But I just loved the focus feel of the 55 Micro and you really mess up sharpness with a relatively well corrected 2.8.

Huss do you (or anyone else) have opinions on this Zeiss 50/1.4 ZF.2 versus the Nikkor 50/1.4 Ai-S?

I have the 50/1.4 Ai-S as part of my Nikon-mount f1.4 kit (Nikkor 28/1.4 AF-D, Zeiss 35/1.4 ZF.2, Nikkor 50/1.4 Ai-S, Nikkor 85/1.4 Ai-S) but haven't really connected with the 50. It's a nice lens of course but it hasn't wowed me as much as the others.

I had both the 55 2.8 and 3.5 Micro and they are fantastic. The only issue I had is on film the max apertures are a bit limiting when the light gets low.
As I also had the Zeiss Makro Planar 50 f2, I decided I didn't need the slower lenses - even though they were a nicer more compact size.
FYI the Zeiss MP 50 f2 is surprisingly not that great against lens flare. I just assumed it having Zeiss coatings etc, that it would be great.

For AF the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 afd in the lightweight polycarbonate is really an excellent performer. If you don't mind the weight, the 50mm f1.2 ais, or a factory ai'd Nikkor-S.C 55mm f1.2 are also great

Here are my thoughts on Nikkor 50mm Lenses:

The Nikkor 50 f/1.8 ai-s (pancake) - I think it's nice enough - small, sharp, low distrotion. As pointed out, @dourbalistar is the master of this lens.
Jenny by Jim Fischer, on Flickr
Nikon FM2n, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 ai-s pancake, Eastman-5222, Rodinal 1:50.

Nikkor 50mm f/1.8g - I use it on my F6. Given the price, it's a very nice lens. Sharp with nice-ish/modern bokeh.
Dad by Jim Fischer, on Flickr
Nikon F6, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8g, Kodak T-Max 400, Xtol 1:1

I also have two versions of the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 (one pre-ai, one af-d). There is a reason that this was the standard 50mm for Nikons. Both are excellent.
Jenny by Jim Fischer, on Flickr
Nikon F6, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 af-d, Kodak Tri-x, Rodinal 1:50

Jenny by Jim Fischer, on Flickr
Nikon F2, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 pre-ai, Kodak T-Max 400, Xtol 1:1

The Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 is multi-character optic. Dreamy wide open with soap bubble bokeh.
Ray by Jim Fischer, on Flickr
Nikon F3, Nikkor 50mm f/1.2, Neopan Presto 400, T-Max Dev

And crazy sharp with smooth bokeh stopped down to f/2:
Dad by Jim Fischer, on Flickr
Nikon F2, Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 ai-s, Ilford Pan F+, Rodinal 1:100.

Ultimately, I think I like the 55mm f/3.5 the most, though, as Huss pointed out, not particularly useful indoors/handheld. I have two of them - an early version with compensating diaphragm and one of the transition models with diamond pattern grip. Both are single coated. They are high-resolving power lenses with medium global contrast and high-micro-contrast

And they can focus really close:

Oh, also, the 45mm f/2.8p is cool little lens - a fun modern-made Tessar (though the diaphragm is in the same spot it's at on an Elmar). It's a little on the fiddly side for me. I wish it were just a little bit bigger.

Don't forget to check out the Voigtländer F-mount lenses as well in the 50-ish focal length range. In addition to the widely praised 40/2, they have a 55/1.2 and the 58/1.4 that you may want to check out. Bastian K. has reviews of them here:

https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-voigtlander-55mm-1-2-sl-iis-nokton-the-last-f-mount-lens/

https://phillipreeve.net/blog/review-voigtlander-58mm-1-4-sl-iis-nokton-nikon-f/

The 55/1.2 in particular looks nice if you need a fast lens, and has some improvements over the original Nikkor.
