Nice. I think your brain-meter did quite well, especially given that you were using a filter. This series demonstrates that you don't need a meter to take good photos.

Wow, that's quite an endorsement. Are you referring to the 'pancake'? The SLII N 40/2 Ultron Aspherical (discontinued)? or the current 40/2 SLIIS Ultron Aspherical (current)?
Are those the same lens formula in different packaging?

I have the chipped version before it doubled in size... That small size makes it so attractive/compact to use. They are all the same optically, apparently the bigger size of the latest version is because 1/ It can now focus closer (the older one focused pretty close but came with a nifty close up lens/filter that allowed for near macro shots, and B/ for looks.
As they are optically identical, get the one which does it more for you. I like small lenses, but I do like the style of the latest one.

I have the newer 'thicc' Ultron. I have never handled the pancake version, but if it's anything like the 45mm f/2.8p, it's probably just a little too thin for me to 100% jive with. The newer style is still compact, but the thicker focus ring and baked-in closer focusing are really nice. Overall, it reminds me a lot of the first 50/1.5 Nokton - sharp enough, smooth enough bokeh, good contrast, really nice looking flare, more barrel distortion and onion rings than I'd like. Still, I agree with your assessment - it's a fave F-Mount lens.

It is compact fer sure, but not as tiny as my 45 2.8 AI-P. I recommend any version as long as it is chipped, because the chipped ones allow it to work with Nikon's AF film SLRs that do not have aperture feelers, like the mighty N80.

I am probably wrong, but I think all versions are chipped.

First version no chippy. I researched this nonsense before I bought mine! First version is also the only one of that generation that came with the prongs for non A-! cameras. Was reintroduced on the one you have - the latest version.

But do a search as I am pretty sure I got it from a domestic vendor. Also - it's ok but the edges IMO are sharper than they should be so it is not that comfortable to hold. But it does make it steadier to hold and beefs up the bad-a$$ery standing.
