Another “mistake”. I had been shooting with 120 film for a couple days and not as much 35mm. When the 35mm roll was done, I opened up the bottom before rewinding…again! Oh well, I’ve come to appreciate light leaks as character. M7 + Portra 800.

I recommend a Nikon N80 w 50 1.8g…
If you shop wisely you should be able to get that for about $150. Or one Leica lens cap…
Never have to worry about forgetting to rewind the film!

Dood. I bought two for about $20 each a year or so ago! I use them more than my F6! They will always be sticky - use that to your advantage to get a cheeeep price. That stickiness cleans right off with a cloth, isopropyl alcohol and 15 minutes of your time.
One thing I really like about the N80/f80 is the custom setting that projects a grid line on the focus screen. I have that on permanently as it makes it super easy to level things. I don’t think any other film Nikon has that feature. My F4, F100, F6 didn’t.
But the one thing to watch out for is a broken door latch. Nikon in their wisdom made them out of plastic on the non single F af SLR models after the N90. So the n60/65/70/75/80/100 have plastic door latches. First off obviously make sure the camera you get has a working latch. Then to keep it that way never snap the back shut when you load film. Always hold up the latch, close the back, then release the latch.

And this is why we need a film forum.

Not going to lie I started researching Nikon film bodies now

And Fred is starting to shoot film, so I think we might get a film forum!

I’ll probably be selling my Mamiya 7 and use my Hasselblad for medium format. No rush to decide. But these Nikons even have autofocus and I can use my 28 1.4, 58 1.4 and 100 1.4 nikon F lenses that basically just sit. So I might get one to play around with it! Haha. What’s the difference between the N80 and say the F100?

AF-S "E" lenses like the 28 and 105 will autofocus on the later AF film SLR's and VR will work, but they can't control aperture so those lenses will always be wide open. So N80, N75, F100, F5, F6, etc. Can't get around the aperture problem. The 58 f/1.4G would work just fine, though.

Between N80 and F100, the F100 is mostly made of metal. The N80 is mostly plastic. Although a lot of F100's had a plastic fork which could break. The F100 feels better in the hand, but functionally there's really no reason to buy one over an N80 unless you just want one.

I had the F100 and sold it (actually them as like most of these things I had two..) as I didn’t like it too much. At the same time I had my F6 which is an unfair comparison as the F6 was better in every way, even down to the way the grip was shaped.
I find the grip on the F100 to just be bulbous. Compared to the F80/N80 IMO the only advantage the F100 had was that you could use non AI and AI lenses as it has an aperture feeler (which can be flipped out of the way for non AI lenses). The N80 needs a chipped lens whether it is manual focus like a Zeiss ZF.2 or CV, or any F mount AF lens.
The thing I much prefer about the N80 compared to the F100 is that it is a much smaller, lighter size. But it still feels solid and great in hand. This just makes it much more enjoyable to take with you. It also has a pop up flash which is super handy for fill in or just for when you haven’t brought a separate one.
But one huge advantage the N80 has is the option to project grid lines on the focus screen, I just love that. And you can get one for $20-$40 vs $150-$250 for an F100. My biggest endorsement is I got rid of the F100s and replaced them with the N80s to go with my F6.
FYI I would not get an F6 just yet @lifeandmylens if you are thinking about it, because the N80 pretty much does everything it does and frankly is way more fun to use.

These two N80s together (without lenses) were cheaper than the Kodak.

Thanks, interesting about the 28 and 105 always being wide open. Can I stop down the aperture on the lens itself and it work?

Wow, at prices like that even I might take the plunge. I have two Nikon-mount lenses (35/1.4 ZF.2 Distagon and the Angénieux-designed Tokina ATX Pro 28-70 2.6-2.8 zoom, which offers autofocus in additional to manual) and I assume those will work on the N80. I've always been curious to see how those lenses perform on film.

As the camera does not have an aperture feeler, the lenses need to have those electronic contacts. If they do, you are good.

No Nikon film slrs work with e aperture lenses. They cannot control the aperture.

Good call on the Ai/Ai-S lenses!

But I did really like the grip on my F100. That rounded shape sat in my hand so well, especially with the heavier and more modern lenses I was using at the time. It just had a dense, compact feel. Mine died within the 6-month warranty period so it was a wash, but I did enjoy that camera a lot. Apparently not enough to buy another one several years on, but a lot!

And I do agree on all points in the N80's favor. I've got one and a couple of N75's which are even more compact with largely the same features, and they're just super practical cameras. I don't really use my F5's much anymore because the N80/N75's give me the same results. They deliver such consistent results. I've been thinking for sometime that if Nikon came out with another film camera, forget successors to the FM3a, F6, or the Ti, just spin up the production line for the N75 and N80 class of bodies and sell us $200-$400 autofocus film cameras again.

The E lenses need to be told to stop down electronically, and unfortunately there's no physical way to stop them down like with the G lenses.

Yeah, I had two F4s as well as the F100 and sold those off even though I really liked them. I decided that the F6 met the ‘pro’ requirement while the N/F80s met the ‘camera you will actually use’ requirement!
I liked the F75 I had but the feature set was just better - without being too much - on the 80 plus the 80 felt like the perfect compromise between build quality and weight.
Nutty thing is the F/N75 often is more expensive now than the 80! The 80 has a bigger and brighter VF, the amazing focus screen, you can set meter patterns no matter what mode you are in - the 75 you had to use custom functions eg I think I had spot set to work with focus lock IIRC - much better dampened shutter, bigger shutter speed range etc.
I’m sure Canon, Minolta, Pentax have equivalents just as good. I just happened to already be in the Nikon ecosystem.

Check your dealer’s shelves, it should be right next to the M7.2.
