p.6 #1 · Really fast 50 Bokeh

I said I was going to give the Noctilux a try at Macro. The wind was reasonable calm this evening and this was the best I could get hand held. I probably needed a focusing rail. In most of the images, I missed the focus. This is a Dianthus closeup using the Noctilux.

Cross-posted from a couple other threads. I'm pretty happy with this shot and so is my wife. That says it all, IMO.

Rokkor 58/1.2 wide open on 5D, ISO 1250, 1/60th.

Really nice shot. Expressive angle focusing both literally and indirectly on the subject in a very creative way. Also like her expression a lot. Please post more shots from your Rokkors, Paul

Are there any really fast 50s (f.95 -f1.2) that we haven't seen samples of yet?

I don't think we have seen any samples from lenses faster than f1 yet.

What a fantastic thread
Why did it take me so long to discover FM and I was stuck with DPR and their sharpness obsession

Only F/1 lenses I've known are the Leica 50mm f/1 and the canon 50mm f/1 both are rare and super expensive...

There is a conversion service provided for the Canon 50mm f0.95 to M-mount and I know of some guys who have had this done.

Hopefully they will post some images here. Based on the samples I have seen, the Nockt and f1.0 L are still at the top of the food chain when it comes to uber large apertures.

The next best have been the OM 50's and 55mm f1.2's. Followed by the kinda pricey Nikon 58mm f1.2 and Rokkor 58mm f1.2's.

...but beaten by the Pentax A50/1.2. (In my experience only, and with reservation for how I would like the Nikon versions, I have never tried any of them.)

There is also a Leica/Elcan 90mm f1 that was made for the military. It is a very expensive collector item and there could be the odd chance somebody has shot it on a M8.

I think Rokkor 58/1.2 has best bokeh, at least among what I have used thus far.
It really is an incredible lens.
What exites me more is that the lens is amazingly sharp wide open.
I was really surprised how good the lens is for shoulder and up portraits, and of course with the singnature bokeh.

Thatīs me to the right My 5D + lens, friend shooting. On a beach in Cannes, France a couple of weeks ago. Love the way the lens draws the surroundings. And its soo sharp.

Do I really need any other lenses? Probably not.

Like the way the OOF guy is in the shadow while you sit in the light and infocus

Yes, its a cool shot, unfortunately not by my hand 58mm and f1.2 is just the perfect focal length to aperture balance in my opinion.

That Cannes shot has the classic 58/1.2 look!

I've not had time to play with the Navitar 50mm f0.95 I bought recently, but a handful of (other!) trial shots indicate its potential for bokeh goodness. Actually, I think I'll be converting this lens for use on my video adaptor . . .

I don't like the way some of the fast 50's have such hard edges on the oof objects. For example, the chairs, and the boat in the distance have a hard double edge.

This lens has no focusing ring. Its focus is factory fixed at infinity, making it of little use for everyday photography, although there are additional rings for closer focusing (sorry, no focusing closer than 20m).

Cheers!
